Last night I watched The Family with Robert DeNiro, Michelle Pfeiffer and Tommy Lee Jones. It's my second Luc Besson movie this week. Good movie. Well acted with some action and a good amount of humor. I give it a rating of 3 stars (out of 4).

Enough Said - James Gandolfini and Julia Louis-Dreyfus
A couple of singles who have been divorced a long time start dating. Both have kids that are college age. I can't say too much without giving the story away but it is an excellent relationship movie about adults who are wary of getting into a new relationship. There is an added sadness that hangs over this movie because of what happened to James Gandolfini.
Anyway, I hope I don't lose my man card because I really liked it.

You're on probation until you've watched Animal House and Dirty Harry as a twin bill.
Taxi Driver, last night. Again. I can't say enough about this movie's ability to capture me for the whole thing.
Sometimes it's a toss up for the people who vote for Best Picture and other toss ups. I read somewhere once that some of those who vote don't take the process very seriously. One year Henry Fonda let his wife vote for him, for instance. But in the case of Taxi Driver vs Rocky the subject matter difference might have been a factor. Back then I assume no one was quite ready for the graphic violence and sexual language, and maybe the political subject matter, in Taxi Driver. Plus, Rocky was a feel good movie, which, if other artistic factors are maintained, tended to win in those days and maybe still does. It's one of those rare movies that seem to get more relevant with age. The Travis character is written and played brilliantly. They really capture that guy that doesn't seem that dangerous to the people around him but is a ticking bomb. It's still hard to believe that Taxi Driver lost to Rocky for best picture in 1976.
It is a pretty good anti-drug movie tho, right?I watched Twin Peaks-Fire Walk With Me this last weekend, hadn't watched it in years...Holy Piss....that movie is so friggin' weird.......
You're so right, DJ. I saw 'night Mother years ago and still remember it! Great film!Get Carter -- 1971 with Michael Caine. I think Michael is fast becoming my favorite actor. No matter what role he is in, no matter big or small or artistic or cheesy, he puts his all into every scene. Love him. Get Carter was a bleak story, but Michael was brilliant.
Also watched, 'night Mother with Sissy Spacek and Anne Bancroft. I think this is a brilliant story -- it won a pulitzer prize.
I was sort of investigating comments made about it and Siskel and Ebert hated it. They didn't like the physical business with the story and I'm thinking, were we paying attention to the same storyline? The physical business HAD to be in this movie. It was the POINT! I just didn't get their thinking at all. They thought it would be better if they had just sat and talked to each other -- for what? an hour and a half of a movie? Sorry, it wouldn't have worked at all. They were dead wrong in their evaluation. Period. Sissy and Anne were brilliant and seamless. And the physical action was integral to the action and the ultimate conclusion.
I recommend this wonderful character study.
