Last night I watched The Family with Robert DeNiro, Michelle Pfeiffer and Tommy Lee Jones. It's my second Luc Besson movie this week. Good movie. Well acted with some action and a good amount of humor. I give it a rating of 3 stars (out of 4).

Maleficent - villainess of Disney's Sleeping Beauty reinvented in tolerable revision of backstory
Edge Of Tomorrow - Tom Cruise in good-natured but forgettable mash-up of Groundhog and Independance Days
A Million Ways To Die In The West - very very rude comedy: more jokes hit than miss
Grace Of Monaco - dull
Locke - surprisingly effective given that it's Tom Hardy on the phone in a car for 90 minutes
22 Jump Street - sequel which is about as funny and rude as its predecessor
Belle - excellent true story of black girl brought up to privilege and prejudice in 18th century England
Oculus - decent psychological horror with Karen Gillan (Amy Pond in Doctor Who)
Devil's Knot - true story of miscarriage of justice in 1993 Alabama, no payoff as none in real life

Enough Said - James Gandolfini and Julia Louis-Dreyfus

A couple of singles who have been divorced a long time start dating. Both have kids that are college age. I can't say too much without giving the story away but it is an excellent relationship movie about adults who are wary of getting into a new relationship. There is an added sadness that hangs over this movie because of what happened to James Gandolfini.

Anyway, I hope I don't lose my man card because I really liked it. ;-D

Hola!

Nice thread.

I came here looking for suggestions and reviews. Thank you everybody.

BTW-if a movie is on Netflix and it's something you might like to watch don't wait too long to go see it. Netflix removes movies without notice so scoot on over there and watch before they disappear.

Happy movie watching!

Peace.

I watched Her the other night. I can't say it wasn't what I expected, because I try and keep my expectations minimal, but it was definitely weird.

How to train your dragon 2 was awesome. Toothless is still one of my favorite voice-less characters. Some very touching moments!

Maleficent had some superior cinematography. I was very excited about watching this movie, I was let down only in it's presentation as more story of an old story. It's not, it's a totally different story with a couple of key points and identical names to connect it in anyway with the 1959 classic. I did enjoy it, and I will watch it again, but I recommend it only with the above knowledge noted.

Taxi Driver, last night. Again. I can't say enough about this movie's ability to capture me for the whole thing.

It's one of those rare movies that seem to get more relevant with age. The Travis character is written and played brilliantly. They really capture that guy that doesn't seem that dangerous to the people around him but is a ticking bomb. It's still hard to believe that Taxi Driver lost to Rocky for best picture in 1976.

oh, rewatches? My-oh-my could I give you a list!
Moulin Rouge!, Dark Knight trilogy, Flight of the Navigator, Pride and Prejudice (the A&E version with Colin Firth, swoon), T2, The Neverending Story, WALLE, Toy Story trilogy (with a heavy rewatch on the third, to which I always bawl), Sin City (finally getting another one this fall, bloody took 'em long enough!), Evil Dead 2, The Sandlot, Death to Smoochy, Memento, Boondock Saints, The Matrix (but only the first), American History X, Back to the Future trilogy, Aliens, Looper (which I can give no logical reason for, since the glaring errors always irk me)...and so many more!

Sometimes it's a toss up for the people who vote for Best Picture and other toss ups. I read somewhere once that some of those who vote don't take the process very seriously. One year Henry Fonda let his wife vote for him, for instance. But in the case of Taxi Driver vs Rocky the subject matter difference might have been a factor. Back then I assume no one was quite ready for the graphic violence and sexual language, and maybe the political subject matter, in Taxi Driver. Plus, Rocky was a feel good movie, which, if other artistic factors are maintained, tended to win in those days and maybe still does.

Get Carter -- 1971 with Michael Caine. I think Michael is fast becoming my favorite actor. No matter what role he is in, no matter big or small or artistic or cheesy, he puts his all into every scene. Love him. Get Carter was a bleak story, but Michael was brilliant.

Also watched, 'night Mother with Sissy Spacek and Anne Bancroft. I think this is a brilliant story -- it won a pulitzer prize.

I was sort of investigating comments made about it and Siskel and Ebert hated it. They didn't like the physical business with the story and I'm thinking, were we paying attention to the same storyline? The physical business HAD to be in this movie. It was the POINT! I just didn't get their thinking at all. They thought it would be better if they had just sat and talked to each other -- for what? an hour and a half of a movie? Sorry, it wouldn't have worked at all. They were dead wrong in their evaluation. Period. Sissy and Anne were brilliant and seamless. And the physical action was integral to the action and the ultimate conclusion.

I recommend this wonderful character study.

You're so right, DJ. I saw 'night Mother years ago and still remember it! Great film!

Today, The Usual Suspects. By now if you're not familiar with Kevin Spacey you really need to get out more often; and American Beauty the other night. These two movies are different kinds of, but feature one of the most enjoyable and entertaining actors I've ever seen. Shoot, there was third...
