Like the current 3 Days To Kill, written and directed by Luc Besson, and both suffer from schizophrenia - straight-faced serious action with serious prejudice, but played with comedy stylings. The two elements contrast so drastically that each has the effect of undermining the effect of the other: consequently, neither works as it should and the film as a whole doesn't.

And this is where I have to disagree. Luc Besson is a fairly prolific filmmaker, sometimes writing and directing, sometimes only writing (and he only wrote 3 Days To Kill, it was directed by McG)and most of his work is like this, a blend of hard action and lots of humor. This coupled with the odd "flavor" of his movies, which are usually a blend of American and European actors, locations, etc. can be a bit off putting to some people who may not be overly familiar with his work. But I thoroughly enjoy Besson's work and find it to be a dandy antidote for the silly yet overly self serious action movies that the regular Hollywood folks churn out. I very much enjoyed 3 Days To Kill and found it to be the most entertaining thing Kevin Costner has made in a long time. It may not be the best story Besson has ever done but it is a textbook example of his style of action, comedy (and the troubled father/daughter relationship element that seems to run through so much of his work). Some people may not gel with the unique vibe of Besson's work, but for those of us who do he rarely disappoints.

Thanks for the healthy disagreement! Besson is someone whose work I always think I ought to like more than I do - it often seems to have a solid core, but something in it which sets my teeth on edge (the screeching annoyance that was Rubi Rhod in Fifth Element, for instance). And anyone with the posing pretentiousness to call himself "McG" has got two strikes against him before he even starts inserting stylistic tics into his material (and yes, I am displaying the prejudices which 60-odd years on this earth have entitled me to!). :D

PS Apologies for saying Besson directed in my original post. I wasn't concentrating.

For years I thought McG was a rapper. Turns out he was a pasty white Irish dude. It may be posing pretentiousness but I've liked the McG movies that I've seen. Sure the Charlies Angels movies were fluff, but mighty pretty fluff. I thought Terminator:Salvation was a better flick than most people gave it credit for, and I really liked We Are Marshall. I definitely think McG is better than hacks like Stephen Sommers, who Hollywood keeps giving money to make things like G.I. Joe.

And I agree about Ruby Rhod in The Fifth Element. Of course screeching annoyance sums up pretty much all of Chris Tucker's performances.

The Big Lebowski (1998) Jeff Bridges, John Goodman, Julianne Moore

I have seen this one a few times and never tire of it. It seems to get funnier every time I see it. It's sort of a detective story except that the detective in this case (Jeff Bridges) is not really a detective but is the probably the laziest dude in California. John Goodman plays the sidekick and if John Goodman has ever had a better role than this, I haven't seen it. The Coen Brothers are awesome and just seem to turn out one great flick after another in all kinds of genres.

This is quite possibly my favorite movie about bowling. I love the rant John Goodman goes on about the rules in particular.

I watched Meet Monica Velour, with Kim Cattrall. Its about a geeky teenage boy who is somewhat obsessed with 70's and 80's porn. When he gets a chance to see in person his favorite porn star from that era, Monica Velour, he goes off to meet her and finds that the years haven't been kind to her. But he then becomes determined to help her and begins to fall in love. It's a quirky, funny, bittersweet movie. Very good performance by Cattrall as the aging porn star. Overall an enjoyable and entertaining movie.

Sounds like it almost could be a true-to-life story. Sorry, not much of a Kim Cattrall fan- she always seems to play to type.

Walking On Sunshine - sunny Mediterranean British romance with 80s pop songs which wants you to think it's Mamma Mia 2.
Jersey Boys - rather dour adaptation of the Four Seasons story stage show.
Mrs Brown's Boys D'Movie - a decent BBC sitcom adapted into a rather poor movie
