Vouluvents, hang on, that's not spelt right... voul-au-vents, perhaps that's it. Anyway, they are indeed pastry shells, you cut top out of them and fill them with stuff. My dad was a baker and he used to make those ( and a prawn filling variation) , I was crazy for them as a child and now even more as it always brings back such nice comforting memories from my childhood. It's actually vol-au-vent which means "Fly in the wind" in reference to the lightness of the pastry. Sorry I'm not trying to be a smart ass here, it's just that I'm actually french. That's so funny, 'cos I was doing the weekly shop last night. In the freezer, on special offer, were vol-au-vents... and you know what, I looked at them and thought "OMG, I must remember the spelling and go on SK board and re-post"...
