Looking for book title, HELP!

Kinda looked around the net today,searching cap kangaroo and poster,and just had no luck..there are so many juvenile books out there,it is rough going without an actual keyword..just wondering,was this a library book? Many libraries are now computerized,don't know how far they go back in their records of what you check out,but it may be worth asking..

I read a book as a teen that I could have swore was by SK but now I'm not so sure. I want to read it again but can't figure out the title or author.
Here is what I know:
It was about a mountain town where nature is fighting back against the town. It starts quietly but as more odd things happen and people disappear the town becomes aware something is wrong. A tree swallows someone up, the ground also swallows someone up. There is a girl who smokes pot and has a captain kangaroo poster. A guy is sent there to investigate something, don't remember what, and he ends up staying thru the whole novel to figure it out. May have something to do with mining. Any help would be appreciated!

Can you remember when, approximately, this came out? What decade?
