We usually have the microwave popcorn, Orville's...two and a half minutes is about right and yeah, some seasonings...no butter. Microwave popcorn has that option doesn't it, low-salt...butter-something? Been years since I made popcorn in the frying pan...small bit of oil, corn kernels, cover...and then I'd move the pan around like I'm scraping paint. Almost feel like doing some up now, reading this thread. I remember having one of those...air-poppers? Hot plate, really, big orange-colored plastic dome, place on tops where you could put butter, perforations in that part so the butter could melt and drip down. That was okay, too.

My son has an air popcorn popper and he likes it just because it is a scooby -doo one. not so sure that has anything to do with the popcorn.

Ours looks pretty much like this, but older.

My kids love popcorn, but I'm not a big fan.

I used to make popcorn in a cast iron pot with healthy safflower oil... Then we got a smooth top electric range and I had to switch to a stainless steel pot and it's just not as good :(
I know! - we got one of those smooth top electric ranges and it was not until after we got it home and read the instructions that it turned out we could not use my old reliable cast iron frying pan on it
Honestly - it is hard to keep clean, too and if you spill anything you must wait for it to cool. Give me back my old range any day. Oh well, that's life, eh?

Live and learn

It does look quite pretty when it's all shiny and smooth. When it comes to stoves I prefer functionality over looks any day!

Sorry - just realized I hijacked this thread - we now use the microwave popcorn but at one time we did have a hot air popper just like this. The babysitter almost caused a fire once by putting margarine in the chamber with the popcorn instead of in the little plastic cup on the top.

I don’t eat much popcorn, but it always brings back childhood memories of Christmas Eve. I would help my grandfather make popcorn down in his dank basement in a nasty 30-year-old blackened popcorn maker encrusted with decades of oil and grime. We would open presents, eat popcorn, have church wafers, get a glass of this sweet alcohol drink he had been fermenting for months in preparation of the holidays, and listen to his stories of Christmas in the "old country." Don’t know if it’s just the catalyst for cherished reminiscence of innocence and a less complicated time, but I recall it being the best tasting popcorn ever!
