A local Shopper's Drug Mart was selling copies yesterday for 25% off. Needless to say, I bought one. Does Mr. King allow certain places to sell his books early or did I just taken advantage of a retail loophole?

(Mind you, I obviously kept my mouth shut while purchasing it, assuming it was Christmas Day instead of Devil's Night.)

They are definitely not supposed to be doing this.

I would get so fired if I put a book out for sale early! I would get fired and thrown into Retail Jail... I'm not sure if there is a real Retail Jail, but I shudder at the thought of it, and putting a book out before the publication date, perish the very whisper of the a suggestion of that idea.

I won't even peek at a book before the release date... she says sheepishly.

I wonder if it was an accident. Say, by a teenage stocker that was texting and not really paying attention. *Oops*

The boxes they are shipped in have a very big label on them that says do not open until November 3 so any store (and there are always some out there and should know better) that puts them out earlier than they should hasn't been given permission to do so.

I used to stock books at Wally, ShopKo, etc. for a big distribution company, and they were very strict about dates...unless a book didn't release on Tuesday or Friday (our stock days, and the days most often tagged by publishers). They didn't want to pay for an extra day of work, so sometimes wanted us to stock early.

Ahhh....now that makes sense as to why the pub date is so often on a Tuesday and why we hear about WalMart in particular putting them out earlier. ;-D

Yep. If it's out early, it's probably an employee of the store, not the distributor putting it out (if it releases on a Tuesday/Friday). The distributor likely has them way in advance, but they're usually not delivered to the store (big stores, anyway) until release date to avoid that exact problem...unless the release date is a weirdy. No idea what happens at little stores, though.

I've seen customers who, knowing an item is out before street date, try to buy the item, and then, when the employee realizes the mistake (some point-of-sale systems will alert the cashier) and tells the customer the transaction cannot be completed, become angry and quote the constitutional amendment about the customer always being right.

Gar... that's awful!

It's just a few days... why can't folks wait?
