The House Of Refuge (a few miles from me). Built in 1876

pc4145.jpg

The House of Refuge is situated on the coastal rocks of the Anastasia Formation, one of the most prominent geologic outcroppings along the entire Eastern seaboard. The house was one of ten houses of refuge commissioned by the U.S. Treasury Department for the United States Life-Saving Service as havens for shipwrecked sailors and travelers along the barren east coast of Florida. It is the only one that remains today.

A Superfund community. A mountain was built out of zinc by-products. I’ve got so much cobalt in me that I glow in the dark. But it’s still better than Centralia was. :)
Dio, where is this Zinc community??
That's enormous !

I love old places like this. How beautiful, and what a rich history.

These are all fantastic pics of beautiful places. I live in Bremerton, WA. on the Kitsap peninsula:

It's a Navy town, mostly, where they build some big ships

We live out in the rural, unincorporated area but B rides the ferry to work every day to and from Seattle. The views are pretty decent ;)

vulcan-park-and-museum.jpg The Vulcan in Birmingham. He stirred up quite the controversy when first displayed because he's mooning half the city. :)

South of my house is rural farmland and peaches galore. Durbin Farms, besides being a farm, is a farmers market and restaurant. They make homemade ice-cream, fried apple pies, peach milkshakes and all sorts of vegetables to go with their fried chicken.

That is just one of the abandoned buildings from the Zinc Company. I live on the Blue Mountain noted in the EPA article.

Also, my home is located above a large deposit of uranium. Any radon level of more than 4 picocuries per liter of volume in a home should have a radon mitigation devise installed. Mine tested 60 picocuries per liter of volume. I try not to jump to hard at any time out of fear of setting of nuclear explosion. :)
