Some things I'd like to see in a '2.0' version of On Writing

I was just going over some of the things in 'On Writing' that aren't necessarily covered because of the advances in online tools, social media, and publishing that have happened between the date it was written and now.

It might be a case of broadening the topic a little bit. After all it's called 'On Writing' not 'On Publishing'. But even without those aspects, a new version of the book could cover:

  • Online research: The tools that are available to writers looking into various topics that they might be writing about (historical, scientific, occult, etc.)
  • Opinion gathering: In cases where you might want to bounce an idea off of someone, the various collaboration and straw poll methods that can be used.
  • Writing tools: Advanced writing tools that will help you save revisions of your work, track occurrences of words and themes, allow for collaboration, etc.
If the theme were to be broadened slightly, it could be expanded to cover some of the more modern publishing issues such as:

  • Finding an agent: Social media, pitch contests, query structures, common agency and publishing scams, typical royalty percentages in modern contracts, etc.
  • Self publishing: Exclusivity, E-book or paper or both, typical royalty percentages for physical and e-books when self publishing, resources, advertising, etc.
  • Time management: How much time to dedicate to online promotion VS traditional bookstore and convention, time management for self publishers, etc.
And I'm sure there would be new takes on a lot of other topics as well.

I'd love to see a modernization of 'On Writing'. It would make me giddy.

Why not write your own version instead? I doubt Stephen is going to revisit the topic again, but I could be wrong.

Because I have 1 book under my own name, about to be 2. When you Google for 'How many books has Stephen King written', it comes up with: At least 98.

Not even Google knows how many books Stephen has written. :p

Stephen wrote On Writing based on his own experience. Most of the issues you mention have only cropped up after he became well-known and had other people to deal with those.

Alright, well, let me get a couple of trilogies under my belt and then I'll give him a call. He an I can meet half way... Iceland by the looks of it. We'll chill in one of those ice-castle hot spas and crank it out some time in 2020.
