How can lights that were working fine last January not work now? They were carefully put away in their original box (new last year), that box put into ANOTHER box (a tote), and that box stored in the crawl space & left untouched until today. What the heck happened?!

When you wrap your xmas gifts and end up with the cardboard tube, wrap your xmas lights around the tube and store for next year. Keeps them from getting all tangled.

Great idea but how do you get it in/out of the house without the decorations falling off and breaking in the process?
You can do that with the decorations on them? That's the part I hate about Christmas trees--the decorating (and putting everything away when it's over) is boring and tedious for me but if I didn't have to do that I might consider having a tree.
I'll just widen all the doorways, still easier than getting it out of the loft, and putting it up
