Well, living out in the boonies, I don't get any kiddies brave enough to wander down my lonesome country road and up my long, rising drive. It'd be a strenuous, possibly creepy trek for today's lazy youth. Kind of a bummer, because, back when I lived in town, I rather enjoyed creepin-up the porch and doling out the goodies. Usually went all out with the Snickers, Reese's Cups and Pieces, Mars Bars, etc.

Oh, and one year, as an added bonus to a few of the more exceptionally monster-costumed kiddies, I handed out some good old horror comics! I'd found a dozen or so copies of the Gemstone line of E.C. Reprints in my local comic shop's dollar box (ones I already owned, of course), and thought they'd make awesome treats for the older 'trickers'. Imagine, along with yer candy bars and M-n-Ms, you got an issue of The Vault of Horror? I sure hope the punks appreciated it, because these days even those reprints are worth some decent bucks.

And, of course, I handed the junk out dressed as The Crypt-Keeper. Heh heh heh.

We had one very old couple on our block back when I was a kid who would give out cans of 7up......they would have cases of 7up lined up by the door...a lot of the kids griped but I always thought it was pretty cool. We were usually thirsty from eating candy as we walked around block so I didn't mind at all. It must have cost them quite a bit of money to stock up once a year for that night.

We were not allowed to eat candy until we got home. Razor blades in apples and all that scare. Strange because I grew up in a small borough where everyone knew each other.

I liked the candy cigarettes because if you blew into them, a puff of powder came out the other end like smoke. I thought I was sophisticated.

Yes. It was the powdered sugar on the outside of the gum. The cigars were too much gum. Now I'm thinking about Turkish Taffys that you threw as hard as you could on the ground to break up.

Grew up in a small village, maybe a thousand souls or so..probably around a hundred or so houses. And we hit every one of them! The anticipation would grow,as we ate our dinner, and our parents tried to calm us down..but we had to run outside and work off some energy chasing each other,in the sharp chill of the October evening..then on with the masks, costumes, grease paint and other things, and out the door and down the street we went.So much fun..back then, quite a few homes gave out homemade cookies, fudge, popcorn balls, and apples..but always some chocolate too ended up in the mix.So we ran wild for an hour and half or so,then came home with our paper grocery bags of booty..and though it felt late,it really wasn't as the Charlie brown Halloween special came on..
As for me,I always buy a batch of the biggest chocolate bars the store has..nothing with nuts, darn it,cause you never know if the kids might have an allergy, but I usually end up just getting plain big old Hershey bars..kind of funny seeing kids go "Wow!" because they often just get the little snack sized ones..
A very Happy Halloween to all the SKMB members.. ;)

My mom would make our Halloween costumes when we were little.
Once my best friend and I as Raggedy Ann and Andy. I got to be Ann. I still remember her dying mop heads red for us. We won something and walked in a parade. My friend still has a picture of it, framed. Ha!

Next year we got in a little bit of trouble. She made us Nun outfits. Right down to the cross and habits. They were perfect. It didn't go over well.

Love mom. hey!

I woulda dug that! Nothing like soda pop to wash down all that sugar! Woo-hoo!

What I always hated was the bible thumpers who thought they had to hand out anti-Halloween pamphlets in lieu of candy, in an effort to steer the kids away from that evil, devil holiday. Yeesh, tried making us all feel like bad kids for just having our spooky fun. The turds.

That's also back when 7up was strong enough that if you took too big of a drink it felt like the back of your throat was being set on fire....

My mom once sewed me an awesome Dracula cape. That thing was movie quality, man, it lasted for years. I wound up giving it to my niece who used to sleep in the thing. Silly kid.

ah! Tell her you remember, it will make her day.

She probably forgot herself. She was but a rug rat back then.I also had a killer werewolf mask that scared all my nieces and nephews at one time or other. Creature from the Black Lagoon, they liked that. Used to help make em up into little ghouls and ghosts. Scared em but they dug it.

My own son never much dug Halloween, not the way we used to. Digs the candy, but not the putrid pageantry of the holiday. Uses a simple black domino mask he can stuff in his pocket. Swag bag in hand. The Middle School Spirit, out for Central City's sweets. All business.

Me, I spent like a week putting my look together. All my friends did. Made me a couple doggone accurate and nauseating Jason Vorheeses, yepper, complete with machete. Hand painted and customized my own spot on hockey mask, with stripe and ax slash just like the movies. Disfigured bald cap. The works.

Last thing I cared about was candy. Derf.
