I wish there had been no "need" to announce it and that they had just done it.
Well, seeing as how there hasn't been anything like this in a 'Disney' movie (The Birdcage doesn't count here), it is something worth mentioning. I, too, long for the day when there isn't a label put in front of a character or person i.e. a black person, an Asian person, a gay person, etc. We're all people, right? ;-D

I think it is a natural. He is always by his side, admires him, and Gaston is presented as an object of desire for a lot of people around him, so that part fits.

About not making it news before the movie is out, I think about a film I just recently watched: Paranorman. In that film, they included a character who is gay but who is also so many other things (both positive and negative). This is just mentioned matter-of-factly, and works perfectly.

Perhaps this is middle ground for Disney. Yes, they will do it. No, it will not be in an animated movie. And they will inform people beforehand, so there are no noisy parents threatening to sue because their poor innocent children were damaged by watching a movie which includes a character who happens to be gay, and also to generate hype.

I really don't know what to think about this. As a 56-year old gay man whose life started out mostly in the closet and has over the years come completely out of the closet I understand in 2017 that this and other such issues need to be addressed. That said, there is part of me that sees this as forced, pandering to a minority. There's also part of me that thinks that this is not the right vehicle for Disney to address this issue. It's complex and I would need a lot more space than this to thoroughly explain how I feel.
