It's unbearable here. Indy was brought to its knees by today. A lot of downed power lines as I expected. Was so worried our electric would go. It usually doesn't take much to down it. For some reason though it has maintained so far.
I feel incredibly sorry for the electric co. folks that are having to get on the lines to fix them. Windchill has been 40 degrees below zero approx all day.
My heart is breaking for all animals out in this crap. Our heat isn't great there is ice layered on the inside of our glass doors. The old '98 Ford Taurus is frozen to the driveway and will not start. The battery is but two weeks old.

We are managing. What worries more than anything right now is when my dog has to go potty. I took him out this morning and he ran straight and peed then ran to the dang car! I was like "no! Just go potty I guarantee there will be no bye-bye for a few days!" He freaked and lay on the driveway because his paws were so cold. I ran toward the house because frostbite can set in within minutes. I screamed for him to follow and luckily he did.
Later.. just a bit ago, took him out one more time. Put Vaseline on his paws. He liked to tore my hands off lol he didn't want any part of that. >_>
Being that he's a German Shepherd the teeth don't feel too great as I am fighting him to put the stuff on. I will get him used to Ace bandages and socks tomorrow on top of the Vaseline. Because when he went out the second time tonight he got slower as he went further in the back yard. Then like a Grizzly he reared up on his hind legs! I am freaking out I don't know what else to do. </3 I just want this weather gone. It's gonna kill my dog just going potty.
I managed to talk him into making peace with his worst enemy -- the vacuum cleaner. >_> I can now vacuum the hair off him lol

German Shepherds are incredibly smart and I know this sounds silly but luckily if you just talk to them, let them ease into something they will understand. I literally have to spell around him if I don't want him to know what I'm sayin' =P. So tomorrow I'm gonna talk my dog into wearing Ace Bandages and socks to go potty. o_O
It's all I can think to do because he is tearing my hands up trying to put on Vaseline. x.X And THAT is with him being a 100% professionally trained, compliant dog that is well aware that I am the master.
I hope you all are staying warm! What a way to start a new year huh?!

I do. It's a ten foot leash that his trainer wants him to use. Whcih means he has ten feet in any direction to do his business while I stay stationary.. It's his potty leash. =P He also has a walking leash and a guide leash. It's just that he has to find that *perfect* spot to poop =P and I let go because I wanted him to find that spot as soon as possible. I mean what the heck is so special about where to poop? It's *poop* FFS, just drop it and go! XD I think he managed to go this time. lol

This morning temperature with windchill is about -30 to -40 C which is -22 to -40 F.

Buses are cancelled, but schools are open. I finally won the argument and my teen son has gone back to bed.
Seriously - schools are open? Did you have to make your teenager stay home? You should have seen my boy light up last night when I told him no school. It was a freaking party around here. and it's 9F! I think we'd just cancel the town if it was -30.

Schools don't close here. Parents get to angry...they want free day care.

And my son was up around six. Made his lunch, had breakfast, then disagreed with me when I said it's to freaking cold. A normal day, it's about a 20-30 minute walk to school. Between home and school there is no place to stop in to warm up. In cold weather he usually walks it in 10-15 minutes, but still, that's long enough to get frost bite.

It's so cold, the salt thrown on the walkway is having no effect at all. It's just sitting on top of the ice.

I guess I forgot what it was like in Ontario, having lived out here for so many years now.

Out here it is a 'dry cold' whereas where you are it is more humid or wet due to the influence of Lake Ontario (I guess you are in southern Ontario?)

I lived there for the first 33 years of my life. Out here even though it is - 32 degrees C which is about - 26 degrees F today, it is not quite as bad. I remember that cold in Ontario used to feel like it penetrated right into your bones. We still get the awful wind chill of course, plus we have had SO much snow this year.

Stay safe, AnnaMarie and take care of you and yours!
