One of the situations my son had trouble dealing with was, his job was to keep someone alive, or even bring them back, knowing full-well, it meant they would die a slow and painful death rather than the quick one they would have had if his ambulance didn't get there so fast. He didn't usually talk about his work, other than the first time he saved a life, and the few times he felt guilty for saving a life.

As a paramedic, he was not to decide whether or not to save, he was to save.

Scott, I have to ask. When an inmate has severe allergies, where are the epi-pens kept? I assume they cannot carry one themselves, but travelling any distance to bring one is not going to end well. And since kids in schools use peanuts or eggs to threaten other students with, I've no doubt a hardened criminal would think nothing of using it. Note to self: never get arrested. EVER!
...we have the Epi-Pens at medical in our pill pass room, and we can be anywhere in the camp fairly quickly, due to having a Polaris Ranger, equipped for transports-as our "ambulance"...it's not ideal, but the best we can do....and actually we have little to no trouble where I am with threats against food allergies, there's plenty of other things they can use against one another....

All I can say is he must have worked on the life squad before they invented DNR's, Do Not Resuscitate orders. I don't especially like them because I'm not a coroner. If they don't want resuscitation and they die I think they should call the coroner every time, but that's not how it always works.
I tolerate DNR's more now than I did at first but I still feel uncomfortable watching someone die no matter if it takes 2 seconds or 2 hours.

I know someone who wrote DNR across his chest before he committed suicide. Then he called the police to let them know he was doing it because he didn't want his kids to find him first.

The one that hit him hardest was a car accident victim. I don't know that a DNR order is ever available for that. And he understood and accepted that he is not a doctor and it's not his place to make that decision. But that doesn't stop him from feeling guilt.

EMT, Scott, KingRice and others who are so wonderful....you are the bestest and I pray for you because you matter to me.
I am not feeling very well right now but that shall pass. I have family visiting from the Fort. So there is safety in numbers and also comfort. You are all a significant presence in my life and can be included in the concept of family. Thank you so very much.
Right back atcha, Staro! I am humbled that you feel this way. Thank you so, so very much!
