I have about seven bookcases. It is a bit crowded in the living room and the bedroom with bookcases but am horrible at giving books away. It hurts. In the living room i even have one behind a door. You dont see the bookcase when the door is open but it was what someone called wasted space. Perfect space for a bookcase. Several pof the pockets also stand in two rows, one behind the other. King among them. But sometimes books just disappear in a creepy way. It has been years since a saw my copy of Dead zone. It like it evolved legs and run away. But mostly they stay where i put them. I've managed to keep books from the kitchen and the bathroom but otherwise..... The two soragerooms that go with the apartment is also full of books.

I have bookcases in every room of my house, except the bathrooms, kitchen and laundry room. I even installed bookshelves on the walls about 6 1/2 feet from the floor to take advantage of the (what I consider) wasted space above doors as I have vaulted (or cathedral) ceilings throughout my house.

I want to build my own bookcases. I have some carpentry experience, but no cabinetmaking; not yet. I don't like the affordable bookcases I find. I figure I can build some decent, very sturdy bookcases which would be much better than the affordable ones, and for less money. I'm looking forward to it. Plus, I think I'll have no choice but to put up shelves everywhere there's some free space. The house is gonna end up a big library! Cool! =D

Depends on how cheaply you can get the wood. My favorite bookcase was made by my dad years ago, and it's still going strong :) BH is going to change out the trim pieces to make it look more modern (gingerbread-type trim was 'in' when dad made it), but it works for me.

When we first moved into my childhood house back in 1972, the first thing my mom did was have professional carpenters build in this floor to ceiling bookcase. One whole huge wall was this built-in bookshelf. Nice strong, dark wood. She had a huge book collection which I inherited.

When she died and we were selling the house, we had an open house and I was sitting there and people would walk through discussing the house, the changes they would make. MANY of the people stopped to say that they would knock out the wall those book cases were on. Tear this beautiful huge built-in book case out! It literally made me sick. I just wanted to bawl.

And did.

Anyone ever have a bookcase made with cement blocks? I did when I got my first apartment. :smile2: Mine had three shelves!
