Nice find at $20!! Once I get settled in my new apartment after the 1st I plan on visiting several of those used furniture places, and a nice size book shelf is one of the items I'll have an eye out for. As of right now I have a small, 2 shelf book cases, stands about 4 feet, and is overflowing with books.

When we first moved into my childhood house back in 1972, the first thing my mom did was have professional carpenters build in this floor to ceiling bookcase. One whole huge wall was this built-in bookshelf. Nice strong, dark wood. She had a huge book collection which I inherited.

When she died and we were selling the house, we had an open house and I was sitting there and people would walk through discussing the house, the changes they would make. MANY of the people stopped to say that they would knock out the wall those book cases were on. Tear this beautiful huge built-in book case out! It literally made me sick. I just wanted to bawl.

And did.
People are stupid and sucky.

Need a roommate?! ;;D;DD

Or someone to read the books?;;D

I think I'm just going to offer to be a maid for you, kingricefan and jchanic !!! I'll even "do windows!" ;-D
Sure, but you'll all have to pass a background check that is more stringent and invasive than the one they use for the FBI/CIA and it will involve a daily full body cavity search before you leave. Now don't worry as I have a large supply of rubber gloves (don't ask). You up for it? And the saying 'I'll even do windows.' means different things in other countries......just sayin'!! I am going to have to get some pics up here of my entire collection (cause y'all keep clammering for them!!).

I can never fit my entire collection in a few pics.

The people who wanted to do that were obvious commies.

Anyone ever have a bookcase made with cement blocks? I did when I got my first apartment. :smile2: Mine had three shelves!

I did that in an apartment once. I still like the idea. It's about books, not looks.

I would have cried, too. In fact, I want to cry now. My SIL had FIL build beautiful bookcases in their family room, then tossed most of her husband's books (for which they were built) books and filled the shelves with tchotchkes and video game crap.

I'm always suspicious of people who don't have at least a few books in their house! Years ago, we had dinner at my husband's boss' house. He and his wife gave us a tour of their home. It was large and expensively decorated but there wasn't one bookcase-- or a book-- in the entire place, not even in the kids' rooms. On the way home we talked about how people could live without books-- how much quality could their lives possible have???? And it seemed like child neglect to us that the children didn't have any either!

He talks about this in The Filthy World doc. Really worth the watch unless you are really sensitive to alternative weird things. Yes, I know you've seen this skimom, I just put that for others who might not have seen it.

Love it! My first visit to my husband's bachelor pad revealed a dog who hated me and bit my ankle, but his smattering of John Steinbeck books convinced me he was worth at least a second visit.

I have a difficult time trusting people who don't read SOMETHING. Doesn't have to be fiction or all highfalutin' 'LIT-rary' books. My dad read nothing but non fiction history and trivia stuff, my mom read Louis L'Amour and bodice rippers, but we always had books around the house and saw our parents read every day. Made an impression: they had four readers (one has passed) and one writer :).

Know exactly what you mean. I'm a compulsive bookshelf-looker. I always look at the books, check out the titles and so on. Probably not polite but i can't help myself. Once i was at a friends place and he had a bookcase but there was no books in it!!! Oh, Horror! I actually heard that bookcase talk to me saying i need books, i need books in a beautiful siren voice that should have enthralled the strongest. But they didn't hear anything. And instead of books there was silly cups and photos and things. Supposed to look nice i understood. It looked approximately as nice as a recently opened crypt from which the smell rose like a dustcloud towards full of unsavoury things. But otherwise he is a good friend so i haven't mentioned my feelings about his "bookcase" to him. He didn't have kids then but has now. I think he would have a few kiddiebooks. He isnt that deadset against them. Too busy to read he said once. How can you be too busy to read over a longer period of time? There can be times but they don't last for years and years.... Sigh.

So many people my age growing up would only read when forced. Even now most of them don't, I remember a few years ago, being at a friends house watching TV when a television preview for the David Fincher version of "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" came on, I casually mentioned that I had read the book and this guy who was there looked at me like I had just stood up and mooned him or something. He made some sarcastic remark about reading being boring, and I made another about him not being able to read, and it went from there. No fight or nothing just some slick talk from both sides, I'm still nice to the guy when I see him. Still, I have to wonder how many people like him there are my age.
