I wonder if anyone in The Stand had their flu shot?
o_O:no_pig::tounge:

Think the setting for that was before flu shots were even thought of? I have been wondering about that one - the history of the flu shot

I never got a flu shot growing up, or even in my twenties, as they were only available at the doctor's office, and I was generally very healthy. Then one winter 27(!!) years ago, I came down with the full symptom classic flue: stuffy nose, chills, sweats, entire body ache, vomiting ... I got all of it! It was a extremely miserable 3-4 days. The Occupational Health Center at my work started offering free flu shots every fall, and I've gotten one each and every year since. 27 years and not a single flu since getting the yearly shots. After that one time, I never want to get the flu ever again!

I'm going to copy and paste this so that people don't think I am advocating for people to NOT get the shot (or vaccine which sounds better) :encouragement:

In general, all medications, including intramuscular, intradermal, and nasal-spray vaccines, have side effects and the potential for allergic reactions. For most medicines and vaccines, the side effects or reactions are infrequent and are minimal if they do occur. Consequently, the pros far outweigh the cons for vaccination. The seasonal and pandemic vaccines (including nasal sprays and intradermal vaccine) are no different.

What is different about the side effects of flu vaccines is that the occasional side effects seen with all flu vaccines usually resemble the flu disease; a few people experience mild side effects, such as headache, nasal congestion, low-grade fever, sore throat, or muscle cramps; some individuals may experience short-term (hours to about a day) dizziness, nausea, and/or soreness or a mild rash at the inoculation site as vaccination side effects.

Although these are short-lived, some people think they contracted the flu from the vaccine. This is a myth.

The intramuscular and intradermal vaccines contain no live virus, so the vaccine cannot transmit the disease. Although the nasal-spray vaccines contain live virus, it contains weakened (attenuated) virus. The vast majority of viruses that are attenuated (altered so they will not replicate or do so poorly) will not be able to cause influenza in people with normal immune systems and good health because the attenuated viruses replicate poorly or not at all in these people. These side effects are most likely to occur in children who have not been exposed to influenza virus in the past, but they can occur in some adults.

Some of those vaccinated develop soreness and occasional redness at the injection site. Allergic reactions are rare. Intramuscular vaccine shots are usually mildly painful when injected into muscle tissue. The new intradermal shots use a very small needle and require 40% less viral antigen, and most people find them to be far less painful than the intramuscular shots.

I highlighted the part about how allergic reactions are rare, but honestly I think I might be one of those who are allergic to the flu vaccine. This is just my personal problem so as danie said, just go with the science and protect yourself and those around you if you are concerned about contracting the flu.

Does anyone have the big scar from the Polio shot? See it on your parents, or yourself? Pretty sure that worked, considering the many that were dying horribly at the time.

Science. danie
Ha! This is funny (or maybe I mean weird) :eek-new:

I don't have one of these scars - back in the 'old days' (whenever that was) when it was time to get a smallpox vaccine we were told you could not get it if you were allergic to eggs.

Then in 1980 they were lining us up for vaccinations in basic training in Cornwallis Nova Scotia and we were told the same thing.

I think you mean the shallow scar that is sort of round and looks a bit sunken so that the skin around it is raised?

Ran across this while trying to find out something about it =D

Hmmm - maybe it is the BCG vaccine that also leaves a scar?

Too much Googling - time to clear my cookies!

Neesy it was the smallpox vaccine that left the scar. Mine is on my arm, but I remember my best friend got hers on her leg.
I looked it up and you're right - the funny thing is, if the disease was apparently eradicated in 1980 I wonder why the Canadian military continued to give us this vaccine?

I went to Cornwallis Nova Scotia in April 1980 and they lined us all up for every needle under the sun - maybe the word hadn't gotten to them yet?
