I know! And I chose it over a re-watch of Twin Peaks or Blue Velvet! :run_pig:

Funny, I just finished watching the last episode of Twin Peaks on blyray two night ago. Flew thru the series till I got to the last epi and then held off 'cause I didn't want it to END again! Isn't that terrible? I've seen it over and over numerous times, knew everything that happened, and yet still didn't want it to end. Guess that's the sign of a good show, eh? I miss that town! I'm so happy that Lynch is back on board for the reboot!!!!!

Killing Them Softly with Brad Pitt, Ray Liotta and James Gandolfini.

I didn't realize this movie was based on the novel Cogan's Trade. This novel was part of a crime trilogy written by George V. Higgins that also includes The Friends of Eddie Coyle (which is a fantastic film with Robert Mitchum and Peter Boyle).

It was pretty good. The novel was set in Boston and the movie makes references to locations in the area (Somerville, Wollaston, Haverhill, Hobrook, Roslindale, etc.) but you never really know what city it's supposed to be. Basic premise is that two low level thugs hold up a mob run poker game that is run by a connected guy (Ray Liotta) who had staged a robbery of this card game before. The mob eventually found out who robbed the game the first time but let Liotta's character off because he was well liked in mob circles. The clowns robbing the game this time figure the mob will think Ray Liotta's character just knocked over his own card game again and will kill him and not bother to look for them. Brad Pitt's character is the hitman the mob calls in to find out who robbed the game and deal with them. James Gandolfini had a small role as another contract killer. He was good in it but it was sad to see him because you could tell he was not well just by looking at him. He died about a year or so after filming :saddd:

It's on Netflix in case anyone is interested in checking it out.

Killing Them Softly

In the interests of balanced viewpoints.... :D

This film had a terrific cast, but it really wasn't very good. The slim story isn't enough to fill the relatively sparse running time, and there are far too many hugely talky sections which seem to be there just to give the actors a chance to act. In particular, James Gandolfini's character is absolutely unnecessary and occupies two lengthy dialogue sessions. Gandolfini is very good, the character is deeply unpleasant, and that part of the film leads nowhere.

But there are also other areas where far too much time is taken to achieve not very much - the dialogue between Frankie and Russell where Russell is descending slowly - very slowly - into a narcotic haze, for instance.

I would not have minded so much if there had been some pace, some excitement, or even something attractive to look at. But this is a slow, tedious, drab film with no sympathetic characters and an over-exaggerated idea of its own significance. The political commentary might have meant something if you are American: I'm not, so it just wasted more time. And I would have quite liked an ending. Never mind, maybe next time.
