...charges WERE brought, Agg Assault-but she refused to testify...here's more from NBC News:

Dropped NFL player Ray Rice, who was suspended indefinitely from the league Friday over video of him punching his now-wife, could have his criminal record wiped clean by next May, documents show. The ex-Ravens running back was charged with aggravated assault in March, but was granted a 12-month pretrial intervention in May as part of a deal with Atlantic County, New Jersey, prosecutors. As long as he stays out of trouble and meets with a probation officer, his record will be cleared.
The
original indictment against Rice says there was "an attempt to cause significant bodily injury" to his then-fiancée Janay Palmer in an Atlantic City casino elevator in February. A complaint brought against Palmer for allegedly hitting Rice in the elevator was dismissed because of "insufficient evidence of criminal conduct."

With video from inside the elevator, as well as some outside of it, and with the witnesses that were outside the elevator (people's feet and legs can be seen when he drags her out of the elevator), they have evidence. They have witnesses.

People keep going on and on (and on and on) about why women stay and people keep going on and one (and on and on) about women defending these men and it's all because otherwise they get punished, and when they leave is the most dangerous time.

And yet.....with evidence and witnesses IT GOT DROPPED because the victim wouldn't testify when she may have refused because she feared for her life.

Her testimony would not have been required here.

An ATTEMPT to cause significant bodily injury?
From what I saw, that attempt was pretty bleeping successful.
Sounds like they totally low-balled the charges.
Yep.
Money talks.

I can't believe there was any need for testimony or witnesses, tbh. The incident is all right there on CCTV.
IIRC, here, with that as evidence, the police & Crown Prosecution Service could opt to press charges regardless of the victim's wishes. They'd also slap a common assault charge on her for what she did.
For him, he's be looking at either assault occasioning grievous bodily harm (GBH) or, if there was 'proper' physical injury like a broken jaw, etc, assault occasioning actual bodily harm (ABH). ABH carries the heavier sentence (and you're talking years, potentially; no need to ban the guy from playing, by the time he came out, he'd be too damn old).
The fact he was high-profile would likely work against him, especially these days, as the courts would want to set an example particularly for the younger fans.

As I keep saying my cousin's kids and my nephew and niece, though, 1) be careful who you get involved with, 2) don't hit, 3) don't stand for being hit. Zero tolerance. It happens once, you walk. (Yes, there's fear of reprisal, etc, for women and men - I know at least two guys who were stalked, and one who was stabbed (non-fatally), by exes; a third doesn't talk about it much, but just describes it as "a ****ing bad time" and his ex as a "complete psycho b*tch". That boy's in therapy 'cause of it.)
The bottom line is, you just don't tolerate it.

I think that Roger Goodell should be stepping down. NFL needs to develop a zero tolerance policy regarding domestic abuse. I just think that they are so used to be super titans, that it is difficult to know when stop.

But you know what? When you are there. If you are a nice person... somehow you end up feeling sorry for the guy.

It's crazy what they can do to your thinking. I am not speaking of this situation. In general

I had to speak with my ex yesterday. It was fine, until I heard him yell at some poor co worker. It brought it all back.

And I actually laughed. And said, I forgot how bad your mean voice is.

Yes, not_nadine

I'm seeing it here, the Ray Rice and on the Cosby situation.

It's a psych thing.

Everyone and their mother are all bent out of shape and want justice. (Whatever *justice* means.) Then, we see EVERYBODY dog piling on the person and we step back and say/think ...awww...poor thing. Maybe I/we should cut them some slack.

It's a PR world.

Peace.

...I'm not everybody...I think he needs his ass kicked up between his shoulder blades...the only time when violence is appropriate on a woman, is if she is attacking you with a weapon-otherwise, we knuckle-draggers can usually subdue without hurting...at least good hearted knuckle-draggers like me...

With Ray Rice there should be no sympathy or feeling sorry for him. There's a pretty clear video of him using his wife as a punching bag. Not a grainy cell phone image where you can't really see anything. It's a clear security video where you can clearly identify the perp and the victim. He's a piece of garbage, period.

Do you really think it's going to stop with this one incident? I can pretty much guarantee we'll see this poor woman again either beat to a pulp or dead.

Has anything about Jian Ghomeshi been raised in this thread? He is famous in Canada. He worked at CBC, and recently was offered the opportunity to quit. He refused, and was fired. This was over things not relating to work...or more accurately, things that happened outside work hours. When CBC fired him, he posted a big thing on Facebook about being fired because a woman he broke up with was stalking him and making false accusations, etc. he admitted to enjoying rough sex but said it was consensual.

And then....more and more women started coming forward and saying they hadn't consented.

One woman said she went to his apartment, he grabbed her by the throat against the wall and then slapped her face hard. She said she wanted to leave and he let her leave. So, I can understand why she didn't call the police at that time.

A lot of women have now come forward. A warrant was put out, and he immediately turned himself in.

But what gets me is....I think he really and truly believes it was all consensual and that he is innocent. He had the opportunity to just walk away quietly. He made it public, which then lead to police involvement. Prior to his Facebook post, the police were not called.
