Seeing The Exorcist when it came out in 1973 was very creepy. There had not really been anything like it before so that added to it's impact. I remember everybody talking about that movie. I remember me and the other kids at school quoting Linda Blair's best lines. ;-D

I was too young to see Rosemary's Baby when it came out but I'm sure that one disturbed some people. Rosemary's Baby is still pretty creepy when you watch it today.

A newer one that creeped me out was Sinister.

Night of the Living Dead. My brothers used to freak me out by whispering 'Look Barbara there's one of them now'. The Haunting of Hill House. Not the remake. A film called Games with Katherine Ross, James Caan and Simone Signoret. Not a well known film, but I first caught it at the height of my babysitting career as a teenager. Found it not too long ago on Amazon. While it didn't have the same affect as it did then, it's still a clever film.

I was a kid when this came out and my mom and aunt actually took me to it, I was so excited.

When Reagan, at the beginning of the film, came into the dinner party and peed on the floor, I knew right then and there the world had lost its mind and that this movie was going to be scary and very different.

When I was a wee little thing I woke up around midnight and needed to pee. I tiptoed downstairs and passed the living room, where one of my parents had fallen asleep in front of the TV and Poltergeist was on. I saw this

and suddenly the need to pee escaped me. I was PETRIFIED of this thing.

Truthfully I'm not a horror fan in the sense of blood, guts, gore, jump scares, massacres, etc. Give me anything that will screw with my psyche and I'm hooked.
In both the book AND the movie, Misery disturbed me on another level enough that I had to put the book down a few times (or, in the case of the movie, pause it and regroup.) It's rare that a movie does a book justice but I feel Misery did a pretty darned good job (both main actors were tremendous, and I adore Kathy Bates anyway.)
As kids my friends were into Nightmare on Elm Street type movies, and I watched them to keep from being teased but they weren't up my alley. I think this is why newish movies don't capture my attention like some of the older classic types--I'd rather see crappy special effects with a solid plot, a good storyline, and good actors.
Misery (the movie) really stuck with me for awhile...

Rosemary's Baby is a mind blower. I still give it a wide berth.
Exorcist? Go ahead and enjoy it with lots of coffee at 9:00PM because you'll be awake for awhile!

The terror of the Exorcist is timeless. It can still scare the pants off a person. Brilliant movie-making. William Peter Blattey's book was wonderful.

While not scary in the "normal" sense, mentioning Nurse Ratched above makes me feel One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest deserves a mention. I saw this as a teenager and it left me sitting rather motionless for awhile after it ended. It really is one of those movies that sticks with you and the re-watch value is incredible IMO. IIRC the cast did spend time in an institution and many of them started experiencing mental issues from the environment alone. Terribly sad for those who have no other choice :(

Jeepers Creepers until I saw that it wasn't a real person, then I was like blah.
I think I've told this story before, but this movie stuck with me.

We watched it at my inlaws house when it was first out on dvd. I had never heard of it or seen any trailers for it. The first glimpse of the Creeper guy really scared me.

Months before, I had a terrible nightmare. Starring the Creeper guy! (Remember I had never heard of this movie before we watched it.) I woke my husband up, I was sitting up in bed, pointing at the Creeper and screaming, still in the grips of my nightmare. He was even after a family member in my dream, just like in the movie.

So, he did freak me out.

I know I had never seen anything about this movie before we watched it. But, I had to of, right? Otherwise, it's just way too creepy that I dreamed of him.

That "Have you checked the children?" used to scare the crap out of me too... I did a lot of babysitting as a teen also.
