I have a mystery at a house I can see from my back yard.

This house must have been a vacation home for someone. For approximately 15 years, I used to see a couple of ladies (did not know them at all) show up a couple of weeks a year at this house and those ladies were the only people I've ever seen go in that house. The house has never been rented, just got an annual visit from these two ladies. The house was well kept, had the grass mowed every week, got painted once, had a roof put on after a hurricane, etc. A year or so ago, the maintenance stopped and the house has been sitting there neglected. I thought that maybe it had been foreclosed on but I kept looking for it to show up for sale and it never has. So finally, yesterday I started digging in the public records to see what was going on. I did not see a foreclosure notice but I did find a notice and some charges from the county for having to mow the grass. Also the tax bill from last year has not been paid. Then I dug further and found that this house was left to a lady in 1996 (probably one of the ladies that showed up every year) and has never had a mortgage. So the house is fully paid for and is probably not too far away from being seized by the county and sold at auction. So, what the hell is going on here? No one is going to let house with no mortgage worth $200,000 just get seized. If the lady died, wouldn't the kids swoop down and sell it? If she was sick with medical bills, wouldn't someone sell it to pay the bills? Is it possible that no one knows this house exists? I'm really puzzled over this.
If I pay the tax bill, and maintenance fees, can it be my house?
Just think.......we could be neighbors!!

Could be that it is going through legal proceedings with remaining family members squabbling over it and is taking some time.

Or you could end up with Sunny as a neighbor........

She might be in a home, unaware or unable to take care of the back issues. A shame. County isn't aggressive in mailing or tracking down people.

I thought about that but someone would be getting the mail and there would be numerous notices for the unpaid tax bill. I haven't spent much time on it so I could be missing stuff but I'll keep looking. I would much rather a relative (or Sunny) have it than the county. I just can't figure out how no one would know about it. You know how kids are, if she had passed, they would search every corner for an asset ;-D.

Earlier, I said that I thought it was father/daughter because the man that passed seemed too old to be a husband but maybe it was a husband because they had the same last name. Maybe she was a daughter, never married and had no kids.

If that was the case, I would think that the estate attorney would maintain the property and pay the tax bill.
....we see this around here quite a bit-especially in the rural areas where a beautiful old home just sits and slowly returns to the earth....all family must be gone and nobody else gives a damn, nor do they have any idea about them.....

Possibility- unmarried, no children, in a state facility. County send out delinquent noticed for maintenance and taxes- no reply at that address, returned. How much does the county really move forward to locate the owner? It is easier to send the notices, place it up for auction on delinquent taxes and such. Does your county post land auctions on line?

That's so sad. Those beautiful old homes are becoming fewer. There is a lot to be said for writing a Will and seeing that
your possessions are directed to those you love.

Creepy version....no one's entered the house for several years and no one ACTUALLY saw the two ladies ever exit the house. Perhaps they never left for a reason......(key the English mystery music here GNT):)
And didn't anyone think twice about that strange odor coming from the house? (Yup, I've been working for Steve too long! :D)
