I just now got my viewing glasses. I started trying to find some a couple of weeks ago, but everyone was sold out here. Finally found a friend last night who had an extra pair, and I drove over to get them this morning. I also downloaded an app that tells me when it's safe to take off the glasses during the totality phase. Solar Eclipse Timer App

My school is having an eclipse party and got glasses for all the students. I haven't told you guys, but I retired this year! I miss being there with the kids, but the extra stuff was just bringing me down. I had my 30 years in, so decided to go for it. Anyway, I wouldn't want to be a first-grade teacher trying to make sure all those little ones have their glasses on at the right time. I'd be afraid one of them would melt his eyeballs by looking before it was safe. Even my middle-schoolers can't be counted on to not try to get attention by removing their glasses and taking a peek.

I'm very excited; the science teacher in me will always be excited about these type events!
Congrats! A friend of mine in Florida who just retired also, said that the schools were keeping the kids longer for pick up to avoid the eclipse. They weren't even going to let them go out to see it just for the reason you just said. Some kid would take his glasses off and look at the sun.

Congrats on retirement! Have a friend who is close and counting the days!

Update for central VA: It's just about half way across. Not dark at all outside. And dang, those are some dark glasses! ;-D:blues:

The totality was amazing! Nighttime dark, crickets chirping, frogs ribbeting, the black coin of the sun surrounded by the brilliant ring of light. Gorgeous. I did hear one bird say WTF, but he was shushed by a motherly cow.

That is awesome. I bet that totality was cool to see.

It was so beautiful! We flew all the way to Missouri just to see it in totality and it was totally worth it. Words, pictures and video can't do it justice! I wasn't prepared for the emotional reaction I had. The word "awesome" is overused these days but I truly was struck with awe, wonder, and peacefulness. Really hit me at a gut level. I didn't want it to be over and I can't wait for the next one in 7 years!
