I just finished a The Best American Science Fiction and Fantasy of 2015. You would think with 2 editors vetting over 80 short stories that they could pick 20 really tight stories in the end. Still, I enjoyed many of them. They ranged from wonderful and thought provoking (Karen Russell's Bad Graft) to interesting idea that was just not quite a story (there's a number of these) to downright lame (Neil Gaiman's How the Marquis Got His Coat Back). I would definitely recommend the book to fans of these genres, especially in short story form. There's enough to savor and even the mediocre stories are worth a read if for nothing but the ideas put forth by the author. Also, there is an end section with a short bio of each author followed by a short commentary by the author on his or her story.
I love Karen Russell. If I could write like any author I've read, it would be Karen Russell. There is something about her writing that just hooks right into me.

The only other writing of hers I've read is Sleep Donation. What's your favorite?
I really like Vampires in the Lemon Grove. I'm a sucker for short stories and my favorite thing a good author writes. (I like SK's short stories more than his novels 9 times out of 10) But, Swamplandia! is good as well as St Lucie's Home for Girls Raised by Wolves is good. I liked Sleep Donation and try to catch her short stories as she publishes them in periodicals.

I just like her writing style.

The woods are lovely dark and deep
I am reading My Best Friend's Exorcism by Grady Hendrix and The Flood Girls by Richard Fifield. Both are very different but the characters in them stand out LOUD. I will seek out Mr. Hendrix's first book and look for more from Mr. Fifield.
Finished My Best Friend's Exorcism and I will pick up his first book Horrorstor at the library today or tomorrow. Finishing up The Flood Girls it's a great read too!! I have also ordered Clinton Cash in graphic form (it's in it's second printing)

I'm not the biggest fan of short stories (I just have something about having to start a new story over and over again so quickly) so I'll probably look into Swamplandia! as my next read when I am done with my current read. Thanks.

Never read any David Morrell. This one looks interesting. Thanks for the info. Think I'll order this one from B&N.
Top book. I've read a number of his books but haven't read this one. Apparently( I went to David Morrell's website) and he's done a updated version of this book but I want to read the first one or so. He's a top writer.

I think it has been a while since I posted in this thread! Since End of Watch, anyway.

Read the 3rd Mitford book, then reread Game of Thrones book 1. Then I just had, had to read A Headful of Ghosts since the prevailing opinion was not good. ;-D I didn't like it either. ;;D It started out really good, I thought, but wowsa. I thought it would be a quick read but I took forever to get through it.

Now I am reading A Fistful of Collars, the 5th Chet and Bernie book. :applause:

Thanks. I went by B&N while I was out yesterday and picked it up. It is the updated version you mentioned. I guess since I've never read the old version I should be ok. Read the first fifty pages or so last night before crashing, solid so far.

.....Swamplandia was a MEHvelous read for me.....
I had a really hard time with this book. I went in with great expectations because it had been highly praised by Carl Hiaasen who writes some seriously funny Florida-based stories and I was hoping for something like his stuff. 1) It wasn't funny and 2) I never really cared for any of the characters and that is very rare for me. So yeah, I'll MEH it with you!;;D To each his own!:cheerful:

Actually, I didn't think it was all that funny, and I didn't really go into it expecting it to be funny. I enjoyed it for just the tilt-to-the-left life this kid had. And her descriptions of things -- I just love her.
