No, who wrote it? Is it a thriller?

It's by Clare Mackintosh, who I'd never heard of before. I got the ebook on sale last week (?) and didn't have high hopes. It seemed to be following a typical "women's fiction" storyline, but then the story took a different turn that I just never saw coming. And I'm usually very good at figuring out twists early on.

The Buried Book, D.M. Pulley. 'Bout 48% kindle. Good story, well written, the proverbial bildungsroman, kid name of Jasper the hero protagonist told through his nine-year-old eyes. Story set in the early 50s, farm life, Jasper's mother brings him to an aunt uncle, leaves, disappears, father present and accounted for. Liked the cover, gray skies, old house abandoned, young person off to the side, large bird in the air nearby...like the idea of buried things. Too...this story includes an idea I've seen expressed in other stories, seen enough for me to highlight it and create a shelf for it, the mark of zero. Related to the disappearing act, gone, poof! finito. Wouldn't that be nice? To not exist? To just up and vanish in the night? Places like East of Eden, The Book of Disquiet, The Machine in Ward Eleven...Locos, Chromos, and Jakob von Gunten. Onward and upward. Was a deal, ad on page one when I turned on the kindle a few days ago, 1.99 regularly more.

Child 44 by Tom Rob Smith. Wowser. I saw the film some time ago and the book was a great bargain on Kindle. The Russia under Stalin is shocking enough, especially when you see how far and wide and evil it was through the eyes of ordinary people and one unique individual. I am about 3/4 of the way through and I'd already figured out the bad guy, but just got handed a shock I was not expecting. Treat yourself.

I picked up READY PLAYER ONE at the thrifty today--has anyone read it? I seem to remember hearing that it was a good story from several sources, but I could be wrong.

I've been slowly getting through NORTH AND SOUTH (Elizabeth Gaskell), and enjoying it quite a bit. It's on the kindle, so I keep forgetting I'm reading it until the next time I'm waiting somewhere without a book and remember to power on the kindle. I like the main male protag immensely. The female protag is okay--a bit of a snob. I'm pretty sure I downloaded another by her at the same time as I downloaded this one, so I'll be drinking from this well for a while :)

Ready Player One is great fun for anyone who grew up in the eighties. So many references to film, video games, tv, and music. I think you'll dig it, but don't expect it to change yer life. By the end you'll have rolled yer eyes too many times...but you WILL read till the end.

Thanks, Muskie! Great, concise review :)

No need to thank me, ma'am (he said in his best Chris Reeve Superman voice), just doing my job. I was gonna buy this'n for my son last Christmas, but realized, heck, he wouldn't get all the references to stuff like Family Ties, Rush, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Heathers, etc. But us oldies, we can dig.

Started reading this today on your recommendation. Great so far!

I'm giving it a try too. Thanks for the recommendation - I got it a couple days ago while the special price was still in effect. I'm about a third of the way into it and it's good! :)
