I went to the local Goodwill (which is soooooo crappy) yesterday in search of a SK book (I've only scored one out of twenty times). Struck out once again. But, I did find a John Denver Greatest Hits CD for $1.99!!! :)
I swear, you should come visit me, morgan ! I rarely go to the thrift store where there AREN'T at least a few of Mr. King's books. You can almost get a complete collection--I've yet to see an original The Stand, The Shining, or IT that is not a book club edition (and not many of those, either), but other than those, I see quite a few.

Thrift shops, Goodwill etc rarely have any SK books in my location. Guess the "old folks" my way just don't read SK.

Today I came home with two Patricia Cornwell hardback 1st printings that each have a signed (by Cornwell) bookplate (with the words Scribner at the bottom) attached to the front page! Cost me all of $4.33 for the two of them!! They even have the Brodart covers on the dj's! Titles are All That Remains (her third Scarpetta book) and From Potter's Field (the sixth Scarpetta book).

Well...I definitely need to donate some money to become a "friend of the library." Apparently the sale is open to them a day early.

Bought hardcovers of Christine and The Tommyknockers, and first edition paperbacks of Cujo and The Dead Zone; hardcovers of Michael Chrichton's Sphere and Prey (both first editions); a nature book for a friend, and a paperback of Showdown by Ted Dekker - all for $11! :)

This is what all the used book store owners do- they snatch up all the good stuff before the general public sees it.

I wonder if ours does that? I would definitely toss a few bucks into the kitty to get in a day early!

Not ALL the good stuff, just most of it. Although it really depends on what your definition of "good" is. But you're right, the majority of books that have any kind of real monetary value never make it to the shelf; they go straight to eBay or ABE books. But there are many, many "good" books to be found at used book stores and libraries. We have several Friends of the Library stores in my neck of the woods, one is even in the basement of a real library. In fact, my latest book purchases came from a Friends of the Library: Early Evan Hunter (aka Ed McBain), another one of my favorite authors. These don't have a whole lot of monetary value, but they are increasingly hard to find (especially in good condition) and are indeed "good" books. The Blackboard Jungle is an absolute classic!

Today the mailman delivered a 1st printing hardback of The King Of Satan's Eyes by Geoffrey Marsh (aka Charles L. Grant- I now have the full set of 'Marsh' books!) and a bookclub hardback of Jaws by Peter Benchley which, for a book that's over 40 years old, is in surprisingly good condition. Looks like it was read once, maybe twice. Was hoping to score a first printing but this'll do. Cost me less than $8 for the both of them.
