I have never heard of this book, so I had to look it up. Sounds awesome - I'm going to keep my eyes open for it.
Oh my lord, you'd love it I think. Danie was saying that some Amazon reviewer called it YA, but it's not. I think because it's not full of sex, perhaps the reviewer found it not 'adult' enough? It's a nice historical, and though it has a romance or two, it's not a 'romance' (cue shirtless men and stirring string music--lol).

The amazon reviews were either "love it or hate it", there seems to be no mediocrity of opinion there. I trust your review.

Yeah, I read em for the articles. Sincerely.

See, coupla months ago I had to help one of the owners of my work clean out his barn for his move to Texas, and inside he found a box chock full of old Playboys from the late 60s, early 70s. He told me I could keep em, so I took em. Mint condish, bubba. Do I hear snickering? Hey, listen bub:

I got the first publication of Hunter S Thompson's The Great Shark Hunt. I got a buncha John Clellon Holmes, including Gone In October. I got killer, vintage interviews with Bob Dylan, Tennessee Williams, buncha others. Got great fiction by Bradbury, Mailer, oh, just too many to list. Plus all that groovy seventies culture, so many cigarette and liquor adds its nuts. And yeah, here and there are pics of chicks--not nearly as many as you'd think. Lots and lots of hair, everywhere, dear god, ugh...

So yeah, I dig em for the articles no matter whatcha think. I mean, jeesh, if it's smut I was after, I have the Internet.

It's axiomatic, Miss Monkeybutts. ;-D
Hmm - I don't even know what that means...

I'll be back after I go look that word up

It's a word that King/Straub used in The Talisman and I've never forgotten it. I had to look it up way back when I first read it as I'd never seen it before. It's a great word, doncha think?
Yes! I had only heard the word "Axiom" as it is a type of system used in neuronavigation. At the hospital the neurosurgeons use this device so they can zero in on brain tumours.

But anyway - back to the thread topic - I have not bought any good used books or anything at a thrift shop lately - I think it's time to go shopping

OMG - I need meds! I thought the word Neesy was looking up was "Monkeybutts!!" (I wish I was kidding! :a11: )

I stopped at a thrift store while I was running errands today. No SK treasures. :( But I did find first edition hardcovers (both in very good condition) of Hannibal and Hannibal Rising by Thomas Harris. I know some readers didn't care for Hannibal, but I really liked it and have read it twice. I haven't read Hannibal Rising.

I had to buy books at a library book sale yesterday--they were there, HBs were 25 cents & PBs were 10 cents, and I was irritated. I only got one book that I'd read before--a copy of The Outsiders for my daughter. The rest were new to me:

Button, Button--Richard Matheson short stories, and I've already finished it :) One horribly misguided story (The Creeping Terror) was more than made up for by an interesting poem (I didn't know Matheson wrote poetry!), and the rest of the stories ranged from good to WOW.

Hot, Flat, and Crowded--Thomas Friedman non fiction. I was impressed by his book From Jerusalem to Beirut when I had to read it for a college class, so I thought I'd give this one a shot.

The Summer Kitchen--Karen Wienreb cosy Women's Lit. I haven't read much of that lately, but I have some reviews coming up, so I thought I'd better get back in the proper mindset.

Blindspot--Revolutionary-Era story. Sounds interesting--the writers attempt to write in an Eighteenth century epistolary style.

The Office of Mercy--Ariel Djanikian Dystopian that caught my eye

I also picked up a copy of Matheson's A Stir of Echoes at the thrift store, and when I took my daughter to the dollar store to look for cosplay items, I found Dennis Lehane's Live By Night for $1! It's only a couple of years old, I haven't read it, and it deal with the Prohibition Era, which fascinates me--SOLD :D

Poor The Man just sighs--lol. When I picked up the second Matheson book he tried gentle dissuasion: "Didn't you just buy 6 books earlier today?" "Yes, but I love books more than anything other than you and the kids. And I'm cheap! Would you rather I collected $500 purses or $300 shoes like your sister?" He sighed and then started planning new bookshelves--;-D
