My mother, who was born and raised in Ireland, said the same thing. St. Patrick’s Day in Ireland is a holy day and nothing more… but that was back in the day. Today it’s even commercialized over there. She always told me nobody ever wore green ‘back home’ on St. Patrick’s Day… that is was an American thing. That’s why I won’t wear green that day. But she did like watching the parades and the corn beef and cabbage she was able to get this time of the year.

I'm both a US and Irish citizen. Most of us of Irish decent don't give two hoots about 'cultural appropriation.' There's bigger things to worry about.

Do you know tramp and hobo clowns came about as a stereotypical dig at the Irish for they way they dressed when they came to America?

I told Andy about this "Corned beef and cabbage" thing and according to him the Irish actually ate ham and cabbage (he said corned beef was too expensive). Now this is coming from a Scottish guy so you might have to take this with a grain of salt.

Andy's right. My mother's family was so poor it was usually mutton and cabbage. Bacon and cabbage was a rare treat. They had no stove and everything was cooked in a cauldron over an open fire. She never had mutton again once she came to this country.

Oooooh - mutton! My Mom would cook that awful stuff when I was young and the smell turned me off completely. I recently tried New Zealand lamb for the first time and it was quite nice.

Nice to hear Andy was right about something :glee::m_snicker: But seriously he did quite a few tours of Northern Ireland when he was in the British Army and I think he had a couple of Irish girlfriends.

I know he has this tattoo on his upper arm that says "Isabel" but it's been covered up by a bird :hmm:

We have a bizarre story in my county. A local attorney and his wife were found dead in their home a couple of weeks ago. After an investigation, the medical examiner determined that they died from Hepatitis A. An article I read said that the attorney had been very sick at work for over a week. A day or so before the couple died, friends of theirs called the police to check on them because the couple wasn't answering the phone. The police checked on them and the attorney answered the door and said they didn't need any assistance. Then a day or two later, the couple was dead. How in the hell can you be that sick and not go to a doctor or a hospital? Very strange but here's part two of the strange story.

We have the worst county recorded outbreak of Hepatitis A in my county right now (and a rise in cases all over the state). There have been 15 cases reported so far in 2019 (0-2 is normal for an entire year). The Health department has been weirdly tight lipped about it and haven't answered any questions of what the source of the outbreak is. I can't even find out where the cases are (are they clustered in a certain area of the county?).

But anyway, how can you be so sick for more than a week that you would let yourself die instead of going to the hospital?

Yikes!

I copied this from a TwinRix site:

What are the symptoms of hepatitis A and B?

Not all infected adults will experience symptoms. That means you could contract hepatitis A or B, and spread the viruses to others, without realizing it.

Symptoms of hepatitis A may include*:

Fever

Nausea

Jaundice (yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes)

Loss of appetite

Vomiting

Abdominal discomfort

Feeling unwell

Dark urine

Fatigue

I used to get vaccinated for hepatitis A and B (and possibly C but I cannot remember) but that was at least 10 years ago.

Wow - that is a strange story fljoe0 :icon_eek:

Weird and scary.

People talk themselves into, "I'll be fine, I just have the flu and need rest." I speak from experience after having to have an emergency surgery after being "fine, I just have the flu."

doh'!

I am the king of "it's only a flesh wound" :) but after a couple of days of being that ill, even I would go to the doctor.

Now you've got me looking into this! Don't forget to wash your hands frequently with soap - wow - they were only 62 years old

"Local public interest in hepatitis A has elevated since attorney Jeffrey Kirsch and his wife, Nancy, both 62, were found dead March 28 in their Palm City home.
The Medical Examiner’s Office last week reported the couple’s cause of death was “complications of hepatitis (hepatitis A).” The manner of death was listed as natural."

Update on my county's hepatitis outbreak. The brother of the attorney that died, died suddenly last week. He lives in Vermont and visited his brother here recently. There wasn't much info on it except that he died from hepatitis complications too. I'm assuming since the article said the brother died suddenly, he didn't go to the doctor either. We now have 19 cases, 3 deaths and 1 death in Vermont that hasn't been officially determined to be related.
