Stephen King’s On Writing Exercise

8/26/2016

My name is Rachel Taylor, and I’m writing this from my work computer. During work hours, I might add, something upon which my string of bosses would frown, since my work is not professional writing (not yet at least… you know as well as anyone, there are just some things you were born to do). My bosses would most likely glare and grimace, too, but, they’ve all taken a vacation day, giving me just the block of time I need to take a crack at the exercise from your book. I finished my first super-creepy novel before I had the benefit of reading On Writing, so I’m using everything you’ve taught me about the toolbox, plot, dialogue and all those revolting little adverbs on my second.

Author's Note: I can't begin to explain how valuable On Writing and this exercise has been to me. It reaffirmed many of my habits and upended others. Thank you.

I'm sorry but we are no longer accepting the writing exercise and cannot post original writing on Stephen's site in any case upon instructions from his attorneys, so have had to delete your story.

You know, the whole reason I came here was to turn in that damn story..and since the first one I wrote broke the rules, (or, rather, the first fossil that I unearthed was twenty feet away from the one Steve was pointing out, and turned out to be a prehistoric squirrel. I took the time to excavate it fully before turning to the other fossil which was a Bit larger and turned out, as we all know, to be a prehistoric platypus.) I also excavated him, wrote up the findings on both and then found this wonderful place - it's filled with lovely people.. and groovy conversations.. now if only I could find someone to read my stories and stroke my delicate ego, lol

If you set up a site for your writing (no ads to sell), you can post a link in the Self-Promotion area and that may encourage folks here to take a look and give you some feedback.
