Was in Washington, DC for two days. It was an overnight showcase for students accepted into the university’s politics, policy and law scholars program. Seems only 12 potential students were invited and 11 showed up. The kids came from all over the country. The university put on a full court press for the students and parents trying to get these students to commit, and I think every one will based on the education they will receive, the prestige, and the connections they’ll make. They’ll each have to intern on Capital Hill at least three times, and each student is expected to study abroad at some point. I told my youngest she might want to intern with our US Congresswoman (who also attended this university), but she said she wants to shoot higher. It was evident by the help the students will get in special guidance, mentoring, and academic requirements the university pushes and expects their PPL scholars to become world leaders.

I also got to sit in a class on the electoral college history from the beginning to the election of 2016 presented by Ron Elving. He’s been a senior editor, correspondent and analyst for many years at NPR, and is the Executive in Residence in the School of Public Affairs at American University. (I’ve listened to him for years on NPR and have read many of his articles). An excellent lecturer and best class I’ve ever attended.
Your daughter has worked hard to accomplish all she has done. Her study ethics and goals are high and I wish her must success. Sounds like you can be a proud dad. Keep us posted as she take this new path.

Yesterday was a volunteer day. We did a budget simulation with seniors from a local high school in Junior Achievement. They are assigned a persona - maybe married, or not. May have kids, or not, but they will have a job, an education debt based on that job, some savings and a credit score. They have to figure Net Monthly Income and plan their budget accordingly. Loads of fun interacting with these kids and watching as they realize exactly how a budget works and hearing the majority of them say "Kids are expensive!"

Today, work, then leaving a bit early as daughter has her first track meet today. 800m.

Budgeting and life realities should be a required class in school. Good luck to your daughter at the track meet.

Good luck to your daughter. 800m is wild. I could barely finish the 400m in high school

First I went to the hospital for my physical therapy. The therapist is really nice. Everyone was talking about flooding locally and in other areas.

Then I called H & R Block for an appointment for Mom, in a town around 30 miles away, because she had spent several days sighing and groaning over her taxes and ended up calculating that she owed over $4,000! I went nuts for half an hour looking for a certain document Mom claimed to know nothing about, finally grabbed what I could, and when we got to the office the guy there immediately found the document right with the other things! Another document was missing and he said if I couldn't find it and email him a copy we would have to go to an office and request a copy and they wouldn't give it to me alone--Mom had to go in person. By that time, that office was closed for today, and we have stuff going on Thursday and Friday and it would be closed on Saturday, and tax day is on Monday.

The meeting was really hilarious. Mom didn't understand the simplest most basic things, such as the forms and what they were for, and started sorting not only through what we brought but items on his desk, and he said, "Hey, get out of my stuff." He would ask her the simplest question such as date of birth and she would rattle on about random details and he said, "It's like talking to my mother!" Finally he got the date of birth out of me. He did the best estimate he could without the other document and said Mom owed NO taxes!

I regretted that we did not seek professional help ten years ago--I know she's overpaid thousands, if what he says is true--but at least we've put a stop to it. Even with getting all documents to him, we will have to go in person again before filing but they are open on Saturday.

When we got home I ransacked the living room and Mom's room for two and a half hours. When I turned up the envelope but not the document itself, I got worried and emptied the wastebasket, which turned out to be lucky as some items in there didn't belong in the trash. Finally gave up, went online, and found somehow my sister had obtained a copy of the document, so I sent it to him saying I guess Mom didn't have to go in person after all! Fairly flattened at this point.
