Biblical Epic Day on TCM--Holy Moly, Ben-Hur, The Bible, Greatest Story Ever Told, King of Kings. Kinda like just one big long movie. Swords and sandals and massive sets, hundreds of extras, lotsa scantily clad ladies in diaphanous veils belly dancing all over the place, bright red Max Factor blood in glorious CinemaScope. They musta killed more men than Cecil B. DeMille...
Watched Fading Gigolo (2013) on Netflix last night. Not a big Woody Allen fan, but really like John Turturro, so I gave it a try. Thought it was just okay. Sharon Stone did a good job.
Saw Joy on Xmas night. Stars Jennifer Lawrence. I enjoyed it a great deal.
I wanted to go see that, but I was too lazy Christmas day. Maybe I'll go see it this weekend.
I went to see The Hateful Eight. I give it a "meh". It was typically Tarantino shocking, but it was mostly dialogue. It could have been a stage play really, but for the special effects. The actors were great, the dialogue was spot on, but it wasn't what I'd expected.
I am working on collecting all of John Wayne's early movies. I got one called Lucky Texan. Man, he was so young in that!
Star Wars - The Force Awakens. Just last night.
We were pleased. As is our custom these last few years, Grandma liked it better than I. But I liked it a lot.
I will say, it's been a while since I've been to a movie where the opening legend is splashed across the screen, and I hear cheers and applause from the audience. And at the end of the movie, applause.
I don't want to say too much about it. I studiously avoided conversations and spoilers before seeing it because I wanted to get the full effect. And I'm glad I did. So I'll do my part in granting the same courtesy to others. If you like this franchise, I believe you'll like the movie. It's more in the spirit of the original three than the subsequent three prequels.
For those of us old enough to have seen the original Star Wars when it came out in '77, there's a certain truth within that experience: We can't go back home again. Star Wars was something we had never seen before, it was glorious, it was paradigm-shifting, it changed movie-making (and marketing) profoundly, and it became the first Big Movie Franchise in a way that the James Bond series could only dream of.
Well, that isn't going to happen again. The original was the train engine, and the other cars are pulled along behind it. Some of those cars are garish and not all that attractive. And then there's the comfortable coach car that reminds you of the charm of this train. That's what this movie is.

Grandpa = without giving spoilers you managed to paint a picture (the train and composition of cars) with perfection. That is exactly the feel one gets from the Star Wars series of movies.
I thought it was amusing during the pre-movie ads that they pitched everything from Star Wars collector's cups to a line of Star Wars makeup from CoverGirl...for that "smoky, just survived a strafing run from a TIE Fighter look" I guess..lol.

The groaner for me came with the pre-movie ad for Petco where they shilled for Star Wars toys for your pets, saying that your pets are Star Wars fans too. Gosh, yeah, I get in long conversations with Fido about the influence of the Force.

I watched "The Harvest" earlier. I figured out the ending pretty quickly (even the big twist after the first big twist) but still thought it a good film, if not very believable.
I still think Reservoir Dogs has one of the best dialogues ever written for a movie. Just about every spoken line in the movie is well done. I've seen it many times and always end up watching it when I come across it on TV. One of Steve Buscemi's best performances imho.Saw Reservoir Dogs on 35mm last night.
