L Word Mississippi: Hate the Sin
Gay women in the south dealing with bigotry and sexism from religious people who think they know everything.
I was especially saddened by one woman who was denying her homosexuality due to pressure from her church.
Why do religious people think they know how others should live their lives? I realize that many go by the Bible, but it can be interpreted any way someone wants it to be. I just don't get it. The judgmental bullying and sanctimonious BS directed toward homosexuals is just hate hiding behind the mask of religious "love." Some of the Christians who so judge homosexuals forget that there are verses about how braiding your hair, wearing gold or pearls, and eating shellfish are also sins. Yet you don't see them in Joe's Crab Shack hoisting their signs about hating me because I ate the steampot with the crab and shrimp. *SIGH*
I have a very dear, very long term friend who was raised in Primitive Baptist family. Makeup, movies, dancing, etc. were all forbidden, and whatever Father said was law. She has spent what has to be at least in the hundreds of thousands of dollars to fly to Denver twice a month over the last 25 years. She sees a 'Christian' counselor who she swears can cure her of being gay. To hate such a basic part of yourself so much is...I can't even think of what to call it. It breaks my heart.
