L Word Mississippi: Hate the Sin
Gay women in the south dealing with bigotry and sexism from religious people who think they know everything.
I was especially saddened by one woman who was denying her homosexuality due to pressure from her church.

Why do religious people think they know how others should live their lives? I realize that many go by the Bible, but it can be interpreted any way someone wants it to be. I just don't get it. The judgmental bullying and sanctimonious BS directed toward homosexuals is just hate hiding behind the mask of religious "love." Some of the Christians who so judge homosexuals forget that there are verses about how braiding your hair, wearing gold or pearls, and eating shellfish are also sins. Yet you don't see them in Joe's Crab Shack hoisting their signs about hating me because I ate the steampot with the crab and shrimp. *SIGH*

I have a very dear, very long term friend who was raised in Primitive Baptist family. Makeup, movies, dancing, etc. were all forbidden, and whatever Father said was law. She has spent what has to be at least in the hundreds of thousands of dollars to fly to Denver twice a month over the last 25 years. She sees a 'Christian' counselor who she swears can cure her of being gay. To hate such a basic part of yourself so much is...I can't even think of what to call it. It breaks my heart.

Wow, this really is heartbreaking...there really are no words, are there? Twenty-five years is a long time to try to be cured of something with which you're born. It's like Einstein trying to be cured of being a genius. I guess if his 'counselor' told him over and over he was dumb, then after 25 years, he might really begin to believe it. But that doesn't mean his IQ score would be any different.

What a difficult life--to live it all as someone you're not.

Citizen USA: A 50 State Roadtrip.
New naturalized American citizens from each state tell what America means to them. I cried in several places hearing what people from other countries have to tolerate.

This film really makes one realize how much Americans take for granted. One newly-naturalized man (from Iran I think) remembers seeing a man in New York (I think) walking a dog who was wearing little socks. He asked him why and the man said, 'Because the pavement is hot.' The man says there are humans in his country who are treated so badly, they would rather be an animal in America than a human in their country. I was sitting in my nice air-conditioned home, watching TV, not afraid of being a woman or having more than one child or wondering where my next meal would come from. And I was humbled.

Yes, I liked it, too.

Is the Shakespeare documentary on Netflix? I'll look for it.

Whether we like it or not, we have to do something about people who prey on our children.

I was going to watch Children of God but the sexual child abuse... I can only take so much at a time.
