Haxan is just a one-of-a-kind movie, even today. People back in 1922 had to be pretty shocked. Cinema was much more adventurous back then, they were still figuring out what movies were for and what they could do!

Oh man, that's why I dig those silent movies, especially silent horror. It's like peering into some black-n-white crystal ball and seeing into the past. That stuff creeps me out way more than any modern horror flick.

Anyway, Muskie's 2016 list (so far):

1. Frankenstein (1931)
2. Bride of Frankenstein (1935)
3. Son of Frankenstein (1939)

Never heard of "The Windmill", Kurben. Any good?
It was a movie made in i Holland about a bunch of tourist, the main character an aussie girl so english is the main language and it is subtitled when not. It was ok, not great but not bad either. The windmill in question is bad business but part of a tour of sightseeings in holland. When there the tourists start disappearing in different ways. A bit according to formula but good enough for the moment. Dont think i'll revisit it though.

4) Jaws

I loved this when I first saw it and every time following that... I loved it just as much tonight, however, I'm wondering if all of those other times I felt so bad for the shark? Tonight I really didn't like how much it must have suffered (if it was real ;;D ) before--the end.
Did I always feel the same way? I can't remember!

Watched Misery. Still wince at that scene, and the relationship between the sheriff and his wife/deputy cracks me up.
I still had a bit of time, though, so I watched a Netflix recommendation: The Bay. It wasn't great, but I got all the way through easily enough so on that basis I'll give it 2.5/5.

Another two-up tonight: 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later.

2. Popcorn (1991)
This is another I had seen before, I could have sworn in jr high but the date says no. ;-D A film class is holding a horror movie festival in order to raise money for an editing room. Someone is using the festival as their own personal revenge playground. Cheesy in parts, but it was fun to revisit this movie, too.

3. The Witch (2015) FTV
This one was good! The open was really disturbing. Set in 1630, a family on a remote farm. Their baby goes missing and the oldest daughter gets blamed, because she was supposed to be watching him. It is a slow burn movie, and the witch is only really seen at the beginning and then one other time. But the series of misfortunes keep coming and coming. I liked it, it wasn't jump in your seat scary but there was a sense of dread throughout.

1. Harbinger Down - Kind of like "The Thing" but on a boat.
2. Jaws: The Revenge - Avoided seeing this movie for 30 years. Wish I had kept the streak going.
3. The Hallow - Good little Irish fright flick. Not really that scary but has a great atmosphere and good monsters.

I watched those on TCM over the weekend! That opening scene in the cemetery in Frankenstein is one of my all-time faves!

4. 10 Cloverfield Lane (FTV)
A woman awakens from a car accident to find herself locked in the bunker of an unstable "prepper" who fervently believes the there's an apocalypse going on outside. Mary Elizabeth Winstead and John Goodman give excellent performances in this tense thriller. There is always the question of whether the prepper is making everything up just to keep the woman as a captive, but there are just enough weird clues here and there to make you uncertain what to believe. Something must be going on up there, but what? Only in the final minutes of the movie do we figure out just what's going on. This is one of those movies where the less you know going into it, the better, so I won't say anything more, except that I really liked this movie!

4 out of 5 stars.
