I own a 'Tiel. The advice I'd give is to remember that they're very social birds. They like to be involved with what's going on around them. They like being talked to, and they like to play with toys that hang in their cage. Mine LOVES millet sprigs. And, for some reason, HATES mirrors.
Above all, patience. They have to get used to you, just like you have to get used to you.

Thank you! It's been so many years since I've worked with animals in any real way, it's almost like I've forgotten my own methods. I've trained "wild", abused, or spoiled horses, tamed feral cats, raised wild birds, worked with dogs that other people were afraid of; and I feel like a total greenhorn now that Fawkes is here. It's good to be reminded that the methods I used on big, dangerous animals can also work on little, scared birds.

And even though Fawkes is still a "cage bird", I've noticed how much he likes to interact. He is a huge flirt! He doesn't sing much, but he'll call for me once in a while, and likes it when I whistle back to him. And he has this trick where he raises his crest, spreads his wings, and "takes a bow". He looks like he's falling off his perch, but he's just showing off. And of course he loves to stand on one leg and display his wings for me. He may not like being touched, but he definitely likes being told he's a pretty bird!

By the way, do you have any pictures of your 'tiel? I'd love to see him/her, if you don't mind sharing. :smile2:

Here's my El Birdo.

Tiels "talk" too. They'll mimic your words, and hold long, involved whistle conversations with you.
Mine beeps.
The studio is just off the kitchen, so often when I open the microwave door to use, the bird makes the microwave beep sounds that she knows are coming. "The bird's beeping." I haven't caught it on tape or video yet, but I hope to.

I also have a cat that knocks. Amber drags the screen door open, lets it slam and waits for somebody to come let her in. I haven't caught that on tape, either.

Your El Birdo is so pretty! Am I seeing right that he has white wings? And it sounds like your cat and bird keep you entertained! They almost sound like little people.

Speaking of animal antics, when I was a kid, my mom had a cat that played piano. She had a little antique child's piano set up next to the cage this kitten was in, and the kitten would reach through the cage bars and deliberately bang on the piano keys. It was the cutest thing!

Fawkes wolf whistles, and loves it when I answer him. He was a lot more vocal when we first brought him home, but he's so quiet now. I don't know why he's keeping his pretty little voice all to himself, I could listen to him all day!

Anyhow, thank you for sharing the picture of El Birdo, he's so pretty, and he looks like a fun little friend! :biggrin2:

Hi, yeah. The white is on the front edge of El Birdo's wings. The rest of the wing is grey. I'll see if I can get another picture showing that. She likes doing that thing where she stands on one foot and fans out a wing. Maybe I can catch that.
Or, well, here's a video.

Thank you for sharing this! I can see why people love cockatiels so much, and I'm definitely not going to give up on my efforts with Fawkes after seeing how sweet your girl is!

They're definitely worth the time and trouble. El Birdo isn't completely hand trained, I can't touch her with my hand at all. But she'll come out and sit on my finger, and I can smooch upon her. She wouldn't even do that much when I first got her. It takes time. Well worth it.
She spends her days with the door of her cage open in the cat-free zone, with a tv running for company when I'm not in there. At night, we just turn the lights off. Some people cover the cage, but I found that doing that gives El birdo night terrors. Poor thing threw just about every feather she's got before I figured it out. Her flight feathers are still growing back in. Each bird is different. Half the fun is getting to know their personalities.

I love all her talking. All these pet birds that everyone is showing, I read a book once about birds and they can get depressed and sad when something happens to their human. It can take a long time to win their trust after losing their "family." They are very smart and I think they can love.

That's so funny! I'm going under the impression that Fawkes is male, but I honestly have no idea.
Isn't that coloration pretty? I have no idea what the name for it is, but I can't get over how pretty it looks. I always think of butter on popcorn, especially with how the pale yellow is kind of mottled on the wings. And the red eyes are awesome! It's a good thing I have other things to do during the day, or I'd just be staring at my bird!
I'd love to hear more about your 'tiels, if you ever want to share. :smile2:
It was quite a few years back when my son was quite young. I was lucky enough to have some time off work to devote to the baby cockatiel. It was great having the two birds, but a bit messy when they were out and about

Remember my little parakeets, Raine and Willow? Well, a while back I got another 'keet, a traditional green that I've named Leif. (please don't laugh!) Anyway, I got rid of the old wooden cage that they were in, because I was noticing a horrid stink in the wood any time I tried to clean it. My gallant husband bought me two new cages, one for Fawkes, the other for the three feathered bouncie balls.
Fawkes doesn't want to leave his new cage at all, even refusing to come out and sit on the top like he did with his old, small cage.
And tonight, after over a week of having these new cages, I've discovered that Leif knows how to get out.
We all went to the park to walk, because we're experiencing a lovely Indian summer here in Reno, and when we got home some three hours later, Leif was out and pattering all over the top of his cage while the other two went nuts trying to get to him.
I tried using zip ties to lock the sliding doors, thinking that was how he weaseled his way out, and not thirty minutes after I'd gotten him put away, he got out again! We zip tied the rest of the doors, but I'm afraid we have a tiny Houdini on our hands! Anyone else have this problem with budgies?
