These versions are like night and day. Aretha took Otis Redding's slightly chauvinistic tune about Otis demanding respect from his woman, changed the gender and turned it into an anthem for women and the civil rights movement. I'm sure Aretha didn't set out to do that but it's amazing what can happen when a song lands in the right place at the right time. I read that the first time Otis heard Aretha's version, he smiled and said, "I think that girl stole my song." It's almost impossible to be better than Otis Redding but Aretha did it on this one.

I think that the Manson one is slightly better than the original. Slightly.

Ooh, don't forget this one!

Thanks for resurrecting this thread, bryras! You are made of awesome. :applause: (<----Is that a person clapping? That's what I am trying for. If this is the "Screw you and the horse you rode in on," smiley, please just ignore it?

I think mentioned in the old thread that two of my favorite Manfred Mann songs turned out to be covers. "Mighty Quinn" is actually Bob Dylan's work, and "Blinded By the Light" was Bruce Springsteen's to start with.

I recently came across another song I thought they wrote, but found it was a cover.

As much as I tend to like originals better, I have to go with Manfred Mann on this one. It may just be that it's more familiar to me, or that it reminds me of Bill Murray and Harold Ram is in the movie "Stripes" and not anything about the actual recording...
