My sister has gone back to her house as the waters are receding where she is. I don't believe they ever lost their power. She was heading to the store to see if there was any bread and a couple of other things left. The local VFW is harboring folks that had to leave their homes in that town. Looks like they made it through this pretty well so thank you all for your thoughts and prayers. The greater Houston area is where the trouble lays and those folks will need a lot of support. May God bless them all and watch over them in the next weeks to come. It's going to take a long time to recover from this nasty hurricane.

I'm glad to hear that. Did she have any water enter her house?

No water in the house. They took out a federal loan about 12 years ago to raise it. It's up about 5 or 6 feet from the ground on block columns. They use the space to store their riding mower, 4-wheelers, etc. underneath (which they put up on the steps leading up to the front porch before they left and it's untouched by water).

That's good.

....I've been through floods here in my hometown which were devastating, but the totality of what has happened in Texas-rivals or exceeds New Orleans when Katrina tried to kill the city....but like their neighbors to the East, Texans are a proud people and they're hearts and will are oversize since everything is bigger in the Lone Star state...they will collectively take a deep breath and start the laborious and painful reconstruction when, and as they can....I only deeply hope that the loss of life doesn't grow much more and that all the critters find their homes....also, I have to offer positive vibes to my Correctional brothers and sisters in the area who have had to move thousands of Inmates to safer realms....our Director has reached out, and there are fundraising efforts underway here to help the staff who have been bludgeoned by Harvey.....

Here, there and everywhere.
Hi, Spideyman , we're fine here near New Orleans. We've had heavy rain, but just typical summer thunderstorm rain, nothing like Houston. My poor cousin - he and his family lost everything in Katrina and moved to Houston, and he lost everything again. :( Fortunately, he and his wife earn a good living and will rebound. My heart aches for the poor and sick and elderly who are in shelters. This is all too familiar, and I can't watch the coverage.

I just heard another story like that on the PBS News Hour. It's tough enough to go through once, I can't imagine going through that twice.

Thankful you are OK. Prayers for your cousin. Can't believe this is happening again. Just be safe.

I, too, have heard of numerous folks that left New Orleans after Katrina and moved to Houston and now have lost everything for the second time. My heart goes out to them all.

Ok I am going to post this hear, not shure if it should be moved else where.

If anyone is thinking of donating physical items to support the hurricane henery victims, please reconsider and donate time or money, or sell some stuff and donate the proceeds. I like in a city that had evacuees from a large forest fire, and saw where most of the stuff people donated ended up, it mostley ended up in the garbage or sold in our thrift store. We had stuff like prom gowns and high heel. Shoes and basically just garbage. So please do t domtate physical items, only donate what they are asking for

I've moved it into the "Hurricane Harvey" thread for you... and this is good advice, thanks.

Plus there's the matter of actually getting things to the city, which is an issue at the moment with both airports shut down. Our grocery stores haven't been restocked in days.

After Hurricane Frances, it was approximately a week before we had a grocery store open close to us. I was getting pretty sick of triscuts and tuna. ;-D

I saw a segment on PBS last night about the Texas Medical Center in Houston and how they were functioning. A few years ago, they built an expensive flood wall system around the place and it worked very well. The medical personnel are basically living there right now and the complex is functioning at a remarkable level considering the problems.
