If I feel like I'm fitting in, then I'm uncomfortable.
Most of the teachers I work with think I'm weird. I'm very laid back and private; this bothers them.
I went to a professional development training today, and the presenter told everyone to get out his iPhone to install an app. I was the only one who didn't have one (just a Tracfone; 3 people have my number).
I've never been on Facebook.
I drive a stick shift.
I don't like my clothes or jewelry to match perfectly.
I wear black army boots. A lot.
I'm most happy when I'm different.

I think Ernest Hemingway, J.D. Salinger, and Jack Kerouac are overrated.

And Chuck Palahniuk and Jonathan Franzen are irritating.

And I like being a SAHM, most of the time :)

Where do you swim against the current?

(Please, no politics or religion. I'm weary unto death of those topics.)
I can't jump on the Hemingway or Palahniuk bandwagon, either.
Haven't read Kerouac or Franzen.
Really dug Salinger, but have only read The Catcher in the Rye.

I can't jump on the electronica bandwagon. I have been forced to buy a throwaway cell phone for a month-long stint in another state where there will be no landline, but I still refuse to text or buy a laptop. Can't stand cell phones and really loathe laptops.

I think I'm the only woman in the U.S. who would toss Brad Pitt out of bed for eating crackers.

I didn't think Julia Roberts deserved an Oscar for Erin Brockovich, not after seeing her competition that year (Joan Allen) chew up the scenery in The Contender.

And we all know what I think of the Kardashians.

I crave acceptance and can't stand it when I get it.

I can't do small talk, and I'm most comfortable in a group when I'm not saying anything.

I drive a stick shift.
Me too. That's weird?

Ah. I taught Grandma to drive a stick shift. And no, that's not code. Unless you want it to be.

I think a lot of us, and I would include myself in this to some extent, look for ways that we're different from the mainstream if for no other reason than we're afraid of being ordinary. We all have a need to be special. Not in every way, and not to the exclusion of human interaction. But we generally want to be unique.

So speaking of human interaction, here's another thing. I can live by myself for days at a time without missing socialization. I have great family and friends whom I love being with. But I'm fine on my own for quite a long time. (Part of it is the sneaking suspicion that no one misses me when I'm not around.)

We are brain twins :) I rarely feel like I 'fit'--in groups, mostly I feel like I'm watching and trying to get a rhythm that is just beyond me.
No iPhone. Not even a smartphone.
I prefer stick shift, though my Forester is automatic.
Small talk is beyond me.
When I worked with a lot of women (and hated it), they thought I was standoffish because I don't do chatter and my private life is my own. I couldn't imagine meeting most of their husbands--I knew WAY more than I wanted to about things that were none of my business. I eventually brought headphones and wore them all the time, though there was usually no music coming out of them.

I'm picturing you and I standing on the outside of the group and being comfortable with it and each other.
It's like you took this from my brain and posted it here just to prove we're the same person. I could swear I wrote it all myself. *Cue Twilight Zone music*

Most people nowadays don't drive stick shift cars.

I don't know about the ladies, but I've always preferred a stick shift because when I'm in the driver's seat, I want to feel like I'm driving the car more than riding in it.

My poor mom could never understand. To her, it took extra energy and attention, and it was inconceivable that someone would prefer a stick shift.

This lady prefers to shift, but most people drive just to get somewhere. I drive to have fun.

The only reason I learned was so I wouldn't have to deal with the AFM (Active Fuel Management) in the automatic Camaros. Dang thing shuts off 4 of the 8 cylinders under certain conditions. That's no fun!

Having now driven both, I really don't have a strong preference for one or the other. With one exception, stop and go traffic. Prefer the automatic then. Getting out of the complex my company's building is in can take up to 30 minutes some days. That's a lot of clutching and shifting :(
