Yes, I loved it. I read the memoir, too. I can't help but think of this movie everytime the mustard jar is empty (loosely speaking, I suppose it's squeeze bottles now) :).
Ah, yes, the mustard jar scene. That was very hard for me to watch. Brought back a lot of memories, not good ones either. But, each time I watch this movie it gets funnier and funnier to me, DeNiro plays so against his tough guy image here. 'Duh-wight. De-wight.'! ;-D Tobias Wolff is not fondly remembered by those people who knew him back in that little town of Concrete, WA. They actually filmed some of it there, too. I went there a couple of years after the movie came out and looked around- the Main Street is pretty much the same as in the movie (where it shows him walking down the sidewalk by the movie theater) but they spruced it up for the movie, of course, so it's dingier in real life. Most of the houses are painted the same drab yellow.

Other than the drab yellow houses and unfortunate name of Concrete, was there anything redeeming about the place? Have you been to Eugene, Oregon? I've seen fan videos online that show many of the locations for Stand By Me. I haven't been west of Yellowstone or Montana but hope to visit the Pacific Northwest in the near future.

It's beautiful country up that way. Five minutes down the road from Concrete is a fantastic Bald Eagle haven where there are literally hundreds, if not thousands of Bald Eagles nesting and hunting there. It really is a beautiful sight to see all of these majestic eagles in one location. People come from everywhere to see them!

I think I'll watch this tonight! I get overwhelmed with choices on Netflix and Hulu and never watch anything.
Let me know if you like it! I had a difficult time with the statue's dialogue in the framing story--half the time I couldn't figure out what she was saying. One story I'd never read before, so I pulled out an old Poe book to see if I had it; now LilMan wants to read the stories :) I think I read my first Poe in 4th or 5th grade (The Tell-Tale Heart), so he's right on track :D

I went to college in Eugene :) Pretty college town. That was where they filmed Animal House, too. Movies always find the more picturesque parts of these towns (or create them). Eugene is more urban than movies make it look. And Astoria Oregon, where they filmed Kindergarten Cop, is more rural rundown and much more diverse than it looked in that movie.

The Good Dinosaur. Cute Disney movie, some (most) of the scenery animation was downright amazing. I would catch myself focusing on the landscape rather than the characters at times.

Ted 2. Oh boy. Completely inappropriate in so many ways but funny as all get out. The Tom Brady scenes had me just about rolling on the floor.

Wow. I am just not a refined person who appreciates some of these "classics."

I thought this movie was terrible. Stupid characters, dumb plot. Not saying the acting wasn't good for what they had to work with. I would've liked to have seen James Dean grow old in films, see what he would have given us as an old man. Same with Sal and Natalie. They all did a great job, but the story was weak.

I only saw snippets of Rebel, but was NOT impressed with the acting abilities of the young cast. James Dean certainly improved when I saw him very recently in Giant. He would have been a great actor, if he had not gotten into that little sports car.....

Awful movie. But, again, for the script, I think they did a good job. I'm at a loss why this is considered one of these great movies.

Maybe because at the time this country was in such turmoil, what with rock and roll becoming a major factor in kids lives and the start of the 'generation gap'?

The Desperate Hours, starring Humphrey Bogart and Fredric March. After that, I popped in the Steven Seagal action-thriller Fire Down Below.
Fire Down Below, haven't seen that one in years. That jacket he wears is tres chic!!! I may have to go home and watch that now....still got it on DVD if I remember correctly:)

Top Gun.

Highly overrated film about very skilled Navy pilots, two of whom are in love with each other, but they were both still in the closet, so they pretended nit to like each other and one of them hooked up with the blonde Pentagon chick instead.
 I knew a guy that was in film school and his teacher showed the class this movie and pointed out all of the things in there that show exactly what you said. Really, the first time the two male main characters meet is in a bar and they lock eyes immediately, just staring at each other from across the bar- they don't know each other at that point? The elevator scene in which Cruise and the lady are alone inside, it's stops on a floor and in steps Kilmer's character. He turns his back to them, without one word being said. Doors close. Elevator doors opens, Kilmer steps out, camera shows his butt as he's leaving (Tom's point-of-view) and Tom says 'Well, that answers that.' or something along those lines anyway. And don't forget all the hot, sweaty men playing volleyball with each other......
