What about the deaths of, say, Elvis and John Lennon? Kurt Cobain? I wasn't there, but I'm curious if anyone here remembers it...

I remember them. I cried when I heard about Lennon.

I remember that day - I had just joined the military that summer and it happened in December 1980 - it was awful.

I was so shocked. When I told an older military guy about it (most of them were quite insensitive back then) he simply said something crude and laughed.

(It never occurred to me to talk back to him or tell him how upset I was - that was just the way it was when you were a private- you had no say in anything).

I remember hearing about them, but entertainment figures don't spark that "Whoa!!!" memory moment in me so much. I don't remember anything specific, but we followed the news and were sad, of course, especially with the Lennon shooting because it was so violent and so awful.

The first time I saw The Wizard Of Oz on television and getting mad at my Mom for her telling me that it was in COLOR (the first ten minutes are black-and-white) and then becoming totally entranced with it and then terrified by the flying monkeys and hiding behind a chair but peeking out because I had to SEE it!!

That's how I watched The Birds.

Correction: I hid behind my mom on the couch.

Those memories for me, are radio, not TV. I just didn't watch a lot of tv, but always had a radio on, so my initial moment of hearing, it was radio.

The day Elvis died, my husband (boyfriend at the time) had his test booked for his driver's licence. The person that took him out for the test was a woman who bawled her eyes out the entire time over Elvis.

I remember Kurt Cobain's death; I was 13 and really starting to love his music :grey: I was shocked, but not surprised. Very sad. More recently, I was gutted to hear of the deaths of HR Giger, MCA of the Beastie Boys, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and James Gandolfini; all very sad losses to the arts, for me.
