I'm so glad you asked. I was just having this conversation with his father. Short answer: it's frustrating as hell. I was raised in suburban New Hampshire as an only child: conversely, my husband (amicably separated for the majority of Danny's life), the youngest of nine, grew up in Chicago. We share custody.
Maybe part of this is my background teaching high school, but I think he is still a kid! Just last night, he asks me
"mom, can I have a ride to the park?"
"Sure! Who's going?
"Friends"
Having past experience with this, I replied
"Friends from . . .?
"Friends."
"like, friends from school, or like that scruffy twenty-year-old who I drove you to meet once?"
"from school"
"how will you be getting home?"
"A friend . . . . . ' S mom?"
"fine honey, call your friend, Id like to talk to his mom and make sure that's OK with her!"
"Actually, I'm not going to go."
His dad's answer to me was "I was running all over the streets of Chicago by age 11, what's the big deal?"
That's my child! We live in the middle of Phoenix and he's 15 1/2!
I probably should ease up, he'd like me more. I can't seem to allow him freedoms that he has not earned.
"Actually, I'm not going to go."
Thank you for taking the time to reply so thoughtfully! Once I let go of my preconceptions about parenting, I learned to adapt and listen. When something I've tried repeatedly is t working, it's time for a beer. ( I was going to say "different approach"- autocorrected)Actually I (not being a father, but always thinking even kids can have responsibilities according to their age) think you are fine in only allowing him whatever freedom he has learned.
You may talk to him about it, though, so the rules are perfectly clear for him.
He should know you are not simply trying to keep him caged (as tempting as that may be).
My parents allowed me to do a lot of things, but I always had to keep them informed of my whereabouts and my returning time, calling if I would be delayed. It is a very fair price, I believe.
I loved this part!
Awww she's a cutie. Champ, it's all part of growing up. Just lay a good foundation and she will come full circle.View attachment 17822 Bella's last day as an 11 year old, last weekend, . You will be a great father, I hope you get the chance.

Thank you DanaShe is a beautiful young lady, Champ.
Wrong, person! But she is beautiful!Thank you Dana
You both look great! She looks wise beyond her years . This is the "going out" stage. Girls get really into it, boys downplay it for a few more years. I love seeing these pics, keep sharing!View attachment 17822 Bella's last day as an 11 year old, last weekend, . I'm dreading the whole 'going to stop at a girlfriend's house' lies. I wouldn't want to get in a fight with Grandpa, he'd smash me.
Yea, me too. I would be the first to die in an apocalypse. Crying shame too - I would be an invaluable source of trivial information. What I suffer from in age-related weakness, I make up in a near-complete lack of speed and aggression.
