I offer my prayers for Shelley Duvall. Personally, I'm not giving up hope that she will get better. However, she is going to need to want to get better and she will need a strong support system in place. God bless her! Shelley Duvall has contributed much to arts and entertainment. Example: I truly enjoyed Shelley Duvall's Faerie Tale Theatre. I have faith that she will overcome this illness with flying colors! Bless her spirit, mind and heart!

Well this was just distressing and discouraging. I'm wondering how she is even alive. I'm not a professional, but I thought Dr. Phil handled her with care and respect.

She seemed too far gone to me and the fact she won't take any meds to stabilize her thinking, I don't understand how they are going to make any significant break throughs. I do hope a medical doctor had a chance to give her an exam.

Man, I remember Fairy Tale Theatre from way back when I was just a wee rat! My favorite was The Boy Who Left Home to Find Out About the Shivers!

I gotta say, although the Popeye movie kinda sucked, Shelley made one dang convincing Olive Oil!

Can't someone force her into treatment? Family sign the papers and commit her into some sort of treatment place? What is it called? a 5150 hold or some jargon like that? I mean, at this point, if someone doesn't step in and just force her into treatment, we're going to watch her die.
Remember she lives in TX and yes there are state commitment laws. But just like at the help center she voluntarily walked into in the show, unless she is willing, she'll walk out. She is refusing medications. There is "alternative medical help" and that is what it appears she is getting now. Hope would be , that in time, she would realize her needs. Part of her wants help, part of her fears it. That pull is strongest for now.

...as long as she maintains a semblance of lucidity and can care for herself, I don't see a judge granting a forced treatment...she is an adult and if she chooses not to go, then she doesn't...

Recovery from mental illness requires a lot of determination and hard work. If forced to enter a psychiatric facility, she is very likely to be unwilling to take the necessary steps toward recovery. It's like the old adage, you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink. Plus, some medications simply don't feel right; can cloud the thinking rather than clarify. I just hope she seeks treatment, steels her resolve to get better, and connects with the right medical professionals to make the road to better mental health as smooth as possible.

Yes,in my state at least, the most you can do is a seventy hour hold of someone that may be a danger to themselves or others..but unless you can articulate it well, even those often walk out of the emergency room. The sad fact is that there is just not enough space to handle the mentally ill,and that is it in a nutshell..not enough rooms, not enough money, not enough trained doctors and staff to handle it.So many of the mentally ill are just out there, some on the streets, some living with family, some in their apartments or group homes..I don't think people grasp how big this issue really is...

My heart hurts for this woman. Shelley Duvall was the 'It' girl from the 70's. After she landed small roles in a couple of moviesand television shows, it was her breakout role in Nashville that brought her the attention in Hollywood and got people talking. She was then given roles in Annie Hall and 3 Women, then got the part of 'Wendy' in The Shining, opposite Jack Nicholson. She is quoted as saying that she had a very hard time filming that movie and I believe that she had a nervous breakdown during it. She says that she spent hours just laying on her back on the floor in her trailer and crying because she felt that Kubrick was being especially cruel to her and forcing her to do take after take of very emotional scenes, which were draining to her. I guess that is why we have the almost catatonic acting turn from her in The Shining. I'm not trying to be cruel with that last statement- I think most of us agree that she wasn't right for that part and that she didn't pass the bar. I thought that she was stupendous as Olive Oyl in Popeye. She went on to produce Fairy Tale Theater and did an amazing job at that. My favorite was when Pee Wee Herman played Pinocchio. I will pray that she will be able to overcome the mental issues that she is displaying. I also think she has a thyroid issue as she has gained so much weight. She used to be stick thin. Can thyroid issues lead to any kind of mental issues? I am not a doctor, so I don't know. I hope she will be able to live a full and productive life.

...I don't think thyroid issues would cause mental illness, lots of physiological problems but not schizophrenia....

Guess who happened to appear in Shelley's American Tall Tales and Legends, opposite Martin Short?

That poor gal! And there are so many suffering like this. I know two people personally going through their own mental health struggles. And they can be dangerous. You can't force them to take meds. One girl I know is convinced "THEY" will poison her meds if she takes them. THEY watch her all the time. It's a horrible way to live. And scary for the family. You never know when they might make a leap into acting on what those voices tell them to do. A blogger I follow just lost her grandmother. She was murdered by her grandchild who suffered from some form of mental illness. It's hellish. Peace to Shelly and her family. It's a long tiresome road.

Again, I don't understand the nature of Schizophrenia, but are you born with this? Or does it come on later in life? I ask because, if she has been dealing with this since she was young, what Kubrick put her through -- scaring her and all that, adding to her torment and again, taking advantage of an unstable person (although I'm sure she kept that hidden to get jobs so he probably didn't know) seems a bit hypocritical of Kubrick's daughter to be writing a letter to Dr. Phil. Two wrongs don't make you righteous, Miss Kubrick. Her father took advantage of an unstable person too, whether he knew it or not.

I would expect more from a person claiming to be a doctor then someone claiming to be a movie director. If symptoms were visible when the movie was made, would they have been recognized by a lay person? Would they have been different then the usual Hollywood crazy?

....anyone with a passing lick of common sense would see that something was "off", but if it wasn't completely manifest-it could have been written off as eccentricity....with his legendary manipulation providing the final push....
