I've begun The Secret History, by Donna Tartt. I remember trying it a couple of times before and finding it hard slogging, but now I'm a different reader and I'm hooked.

And I found out that for any of you who read Life After Life, by Kate Atkinson, there is a companion novel coming out that centers on the life of Ursula Todd's brother.
I enjoyed The Secret History quite a bit! Not read Life after Life, but I like her Jackson Brodie books. I'd like to be able to see the TV movies/shows with Jason Isaacs they've made of those.

I'm about 2/3 through Swan Song and hoping to finish soon :)

I think all three of Donna Tartts books are good even if the Secret History wins the prize. The Little Friend and The Gold Finch i enjoyed too.

Just re-read an old, long article by John Clellon Holmes, Gone In October, all about Kerouac's funeral; how John, Shirley, and Allen/Peter/Gregory (Corso) all piled in his car and drove up to Lowell for Jack's wake. Quite possibly the best funeral story I ever read, so bittersweet, fulla autumn leaves and nostalgia.

Collected some more books from my mum to incorporate in my collection. Solsjenytzins Gulag-Archipelago. Seven books with many characters from real life dealing with the camps during Lenin and Stalin. Just read the foreword so far where he says that he has not published it so far because of the people still living but since they now are banned there is no longer any option but to publish. He had some experience from sitting in the camps himself. Also some books by a rather weird but amusing science ficton writer, Philip Jose Farmer. Written several interesting series ; Riverworld, Dayworld and The World of Tiers series. Not always good but mostly interesting. Also decided to keep Marion Zimmer Bradleys The Mists of Avalon. Sentimentality. Does not think it is the best arthurian novel but is also amusing.

Gulag are very interesting books! I read them years ago, and still remember sections of them quite vividly.

I am around 130 ish pages in and I think the problem is the characters.
They don't seem fleshed out as well as usual in King's work.
I always tend to care what happens to the people in his books, but to be perfectly honest I couldn't care less if all 3 get mullered in the next few pages or not.
Very weak so far, really hope it gets better.

To me it didn't and I really felt that he didn't write all of it . . .it didn't feel like him.

A friend gave me a novel by Jeffrey Archer, "Kane and Abel", to read when I loaned him "The Abominable". I was okay with the first part of the story, but the further I got, the less I thought of it. The plot was much too contrived for me, nor did I think the characters were all that realistic. I need to stick with reading picks from this thread when it comes to recommendations. I just started "The Goldfinch" by Donna Tartt, which I brought home from the library last week. So far, so good.

White Plague by Jack Abel. Arctic circle, US nuclear submarine, special forces, virulent strain of some horrible virus on board the submarine, Chinese sub trying to get there first to salvage the sub, and a Government conspiracy to boot. Other than maybe trying to make the plot a little too intricate, this book is pretty good so far.

I found an Ebook thru Amazon called "Extinction Horizon" by Nicholas Smith. I'm pleasantly surprised so far. Found myself over a hundred pages into it last night and it was 1am in the morning. Ebola virus gets combined with a Vietnam era experimental super soldier virus called "VX-99"......you can guess the results. Super strength zombies with a case of the munchies. It's a fast paced ride so far. Apparently it's the first book of a series.

After I read this post, I purchased this on Amazon. I started it a few days ago and I'm almost done with it. I have enjoyed it and will be looking for the next in the series. The infected in this book remind me a little of the "28 Days Later" type of infected creatures.

Because of this thread, I've read a few books I never would have known about. I like picking one from this thread every now and then.

I finished the second installment the other day, "Extinction Edge". I think this guy is on to a pretty good plot. The second book was good also. I like the zombies in this series.
