The Last September, for review. It's okay--nothing stellar so far, but a decent picture of a marital relationship strained by infidelity and a family member's mental illness. The writer has a nice style--good with words--but the murder mystery it's billed as...not so much. I'm over half way through, and there's no mystery so far.

From Scotland, live in Ireland
I recently finished "The Colorado Kid" which was good but too short, then a book called "Mamie Cadden" which is a true story about a nurse who performed thousands of illegal abortions in Ireland in the 1940s and was sentenced to death after several of her patients died. (Allegedly her ghost haunts a road near Dublin)

Now reading "Joyland" by Stephen King. Really enjoying it so far.

Finished The Elementals by McDowell; it was quite a ride with some wonderful characters and the right amount of chills up/down spine. The library is holding A Head Full of Ghosts and Feed is travelling through the county so I think I'll start Katie by McDowell on my tab until I get the call.
Katie is a keepah!

I am currently reading The Accident by Linwood Barclay. A brilliant, hard-to-guess and pacy twister. This author is original, fun, I love his change in perspectives from first person to second to third in the same book. Lots of his works at the library I work at...!! I love tidying up the fiction section, even when it doesn't need it, having a quick read...lol.

The Flicker Men by Ted Kosmatka

Mind blowing and ultra-awesome use of the double slit experiment. Parallel universes, Gabriel's Horn, a test for the soul? are just some of the cool concepts in Kosmatka's latest book. Filled with a lot of great ideas, may be slightly too heavy on some of the science for casual thriller readers, this story is literally the tip - or a thin slice - of the iceberg.

Kosmatka continues to write in his terse, often pedal to the metal, style that creates engrossing page turning reads that will have you finishing his books in a couple of days. The pace of this book is relentless which sacrifices characterization somewhat and this book contains enough ideas to easily do a trilogy.

Kosmatka has established himself as a techno thriller writer who obviously adheres to the showbiz creedo of - "Always leave them wanting more."

Of this book I definitely wanted more. More! MORE!

I do. I love it. It's a university library, so even more interesting. Such huge sections on so many subjects. Yes, I often give the fiction section extra, extra attention...peeking between the covers...!!!!! Just fell into it by chance really, lucky break...

Okay, I read Pop Art today and that is truly one of the most bizarre stories I've ever read! Until the very end I thought that Art was
his imaginary friend!
What was your take on the story? I'm still processing.

Yeah, I was a little confused with Art as well. I still don't really know what to make of it.

Either it is all in his head or it is an alternate reality where inflatable people exist.

Either way it was one of the most unique stories I have read. I enjoyed it a lot, though "My Father's Mask" may be my favorite of the short stories in the book. Have you gotten to that one yet? It is even more confusing than Pop Art.

Oh, you just don't know; it seems I missed his books in the '80s but now Valancourt is republishing them! I am telling everyone who will listen if they want to have the juice scared out of 'em, pick up one of this guy's books. Mr. King was so right about him!

Same here! kingricefan turned me on to them. I have read all the Blackwater books, Katie, The Elementals, Cold Moon Over Babylon and Gilded Needles and the first in another series of his, Jack and Susan in 1913. That one is lighthearted fluff, but fun. Not scary at all.
