I have a (kind of) similar story concerning my cat Jake 3 days ago. Not quite the same outcome unfortunately... and it was a rat, instead of a mouse. A BIG rat--barely fit on the hearth shovel.I am happy because our cat, "Pudz the Might Hunter", proudly brought home a Field Mouse and let it go in the porch. Fortunately I was able to distract her long enough with a cat treat, before blood was spilled, for the Mouse to make it's escape back into the garden unharmed.
So it was a Win/Win situation.
But I often wonder why no one markets a "Mouse" flavoured treat or cat food?
The disposal part of the story was kinda interesting... it was late at night, raining, cold and I had to... deposit (throw) the rat over the back fence down into the long grass alongside the river. (because I didn't want the cats or dogs eating it in case it had been into poison)
I could have gone through the gate to do this, but there are massive trees overhanging the fence and gate and I could hear possums sitting up there hissing... I don't like the feeling of possums overhead, they have sharp claws.
So... I thought, no worries, I'll just hiff it over the fence and go bury it in the morning. It hit a tree and came bouncing back, to land at my feet. Gar..! I got it over on the second try... RIP, Ratty.
Crap, this is definitely not the right thread for this story... please forgive.
