Truth Or Consequences, N.M. (1997) Kiefer Sutherland

First part of a twofer in the cheap blu-ray bin. I shouldn't have liked it because of some serious logic holes and cliched characters but I found it entertaining anyway. The movie is gritty and very violent. Kiefer's gang rips off a drug dealer and plans on selling the drugs. They take some hostages and have the police as well as some criminals after them.

Marie Antoinette -- Sofia Coppola wrote and directed

I love this movie. The artistic presence of it all. The cinematography is grand scale and the props and costuming are terrific. Plus I loved how she set modern music to parts of the movie. And when she did that, it just fit perfect.

Is this the movie with Kirsten Dunst? I may have to check it out.

Born to Be Bad (1934), starring Loretta Young and Cary Grant. Slick, stylish, and surprisingly scandalous Golden Age meller from Twentieth Century Fox shows a war of wits between irresponsible, cynical tramp Young and conservative dairy magnate Grant after the latter adopts her troublemaking seven year-old boy when she's legally declared an unfit mother. Sentimental, well-acted, and well-meaning, but many of the characters are underdeveloped; it's telling that Young is a more complex, dynamic character than Grant. 2 1/2 out of four.

And as a bonus, I'll give you my thoughts on one of my favorite Bruce Willis movies, The Last Boy Scout (1991), directed by Tony Scott. Willis plays Joe Hallenbeck, a disgraced Secret Service agent turned private eye with an unfaithful wife and a disrespectful daughter. He teams up with disgraced ex-quarterback Jimmy Dix (Damon Wayans, in a great performance) to get to the bottom of the murder of the latter's girlfriend (a young Halle Berry). In the process, they uncover an insidious conspiracy involving gambling and professional football. A smart, unapologetically in-your-face action thriller from beginning to end, filled with snappy comebacks and lots of violence, courtesy of Shane Black's script. Not exactly high art, but very fun. Three out of four.

Flash Gordon. (1980)

Hokey romp that always makes me laugh. Haven’t seen it in many years and don’t think I ever saw it from the beginning. So Flash was the quarterback for the NY Jets... savior of the universe? :)

Go, Flash, Go!

Was it funnier than Flesh Gordon? Grandma and I, long before we were Gma and Gpa, and even before we were Mom and Dad, saw it by accident, more or less. I understand it's supposed to be a porn movie, but what we saw was strictly an R movie. If you were in the right mood, it was pretty funny, especially the first time you see the rocket. I was in the right mood. So was the friend we were with. But Grandma wasn't, although she chuckled sometimes despite herself.

Don't know... Never seen an 'X' rated film. I've led such a sheltered life. :(

I dunno...film looks great, starts to pull me in, then the post punk score pushes me back out. I hate when period flicks use modern pop songs in the score. It irks me, I tell yez.

And the ending...felt kinda cheated, heh heh.
see, I loved the modern music. That and the look of the whole thing. Found it creative and fresh.

Well, here ya go. Once again, I will be the cheese that stands alone. I don't get why this is such a classic. I wasn't impressed in the slightest. Not at all. Not one bit. Maybe one of you movie aficionados can explain it to me.

If I have to explain...

But nah, it's an okay flick. It ain't no Key Largo or Beat the Devil, but I like it. Peter Lorre and Sidney Greenstreet? Sign me up.

Sinbad--Early-ish Dreamworks animated film. I took the older kids to see it when it first came out, but that was ages ago. This time with The Kid, and I remembered absolutely nothing about it. It was okay. I need to find some 3-D glasses so we can watch the 2nd and 3rd Black Lagoon pics. That's what he really wanted to watch, but they're both strictly in 3-D. Five minutes into the 2nd movie without the glasses and the blue/red registration had my head thwanging. Maybe next week (if Amazon delivers fast :D ).
