I can be a dick sometimes (ask around), but I really wanted to make the point that you can't take the particular thing out of that particular movie.s

I think I remember that this is one of your "pet peeves," but I'm going to go ahead and say that 'for my money' Breaking Away was one of the first films that tried to teach kids (teenagers) that it was okay to clue your parents into the idea that what you wanted was more important than what they thought you should want.

I mean ... C' mon, man ... Star Wars was cool and stuff ... but Breaking Away spoke !!!

Loud !!!

As Cyrus might say : 'Can you dig it?"

The Judge. Robert Downey, Jr does his usual fast-talking snarky thing, with Robert Duvall and Billy Bob Thornton. Not bad. I usually despise courtroom dramas but this one ran a bit deeper. Was digging all the Indiana stuff--until I found out most of it was filmed in Massachusetts (der...). Must be hard acting with Downey--the sucker is so fast and sharp, practically stepping on everyone else's lines.

I saw this. It gave me all kinds of emotions. Mostly sad.
Agree about Downey. You are just waiting for him with a subtle snap.

Could be just his eyes, but it comes.

Watching 'A Good Marriage' right now....yelling at the screen, lol.

*** POTENTIAL SPOILERS!! ***
Says a fair bit about misogyny, 'rape culture', and the objectification of women, especially during the funeral scene...

The Witch: A New-England Folktale (2015)

9/10

Holy sh*t, this movie was good. I loved the cinematography, the score, the direction and the acting. One of the best movies I have seen that came out last year.

After I read your post, I rented it and just finished watching it. I thought it was awesome. The depiction of 17th Century New England was very authentic. So:

what's your take on the witch? I think it was all in their minds and caused by their extremely narrow religious views. The movie can be interpreted many different ways but I'm thinking it was all in their heads.

I couldn't figure out if I really liked this movie, or it was my Downey crush. I tend to like whatever he does. Can you believe he's 51? Looks about 25 on that bicycle. Okay, I'll be quiet now.

Birdman - Michael Keaton gives a virtuoso performance as an actor known best for a superhero role trying to prove he is capable of greater things while his inner demons tear down his ability to diffferentiate between reality and fantasy. Keaton heads a great cast with Ed Norton and Emma Stone as fellow standouts.

The direction of this movie is so fantastic that it becomes distracting because there are so many uninterrupted shots that made me focus on catching when the next cut would show up.

Love the ending as it is one that is open to interpretation.

After seeing it in the cinema, my full review included:
I have seen it called pretentious. There are those who love it. But it is possible to admire it without necessarily liking it very much, and some may find it utterly bewildering. All of these are absolutely valid reactions to it, and I felt all of them at different times as the movie progressed. But the one thing I can say with certainty is that it is completely original, and anyone with a love of cinema should experience it.

Agree. I wouldn't watch it again as I stated earlier, but Keaton gives a terrific performance.

This could totally be a critique of Mulholland Drive.....:cheerful:

The Time Traveler's Wife.

I really enjoyed the book when I read it years ago. The movie, not so much...the actors didn't seem into the characters or something, especially Eric Bana. Every line felt like he was actually reading it for the first time.
And the ending of the book was so much better....
the movie ended with him getting shot by the dad in a hunting accident. The book ended with him getting shot by the dad because "strange naked man talking to very young daughter behind his house".

Black Mass. Or, as I like to call it, the Depparted. Not bad, watchable. Didn't 'wow' me, but Depp sure gave a creepy performance.

Re-watched a couple oldies. Blackboard Jungle. Hey, this flick is great. Holds up extremely well, still socially relevant. Great performances, sure...Glenn Ford, Sidney Portier, Anne Francis (grr, I'd like to land on her 'Forbiddon Planet'), but the show stopper here is Vic Morrow--wow, like some bully from an early King novel.

Out of the Past. Noir at its finest. Bob Mitchum, Kirk Douglas, and a 'dame to kill for', Jane Greer. This has long been one of my 'go to' comfort flicks. Great stuff.

That never even crossed my mind until after the film was done. When I was watching it, I just accepted that yes, there was a witch. I looked at it as almost a domestic drama about a family falling apart due to forces beyond their control (which, in this case, was a witch).

Cannibal Holocaust (1980)

?/10

I don't actually know how to rate the movie. On one hand, it did what it was meant to, which was disturb the hell out of me. A super effective exploitation horror, with an excellent score (like, even before I saw the movie, I loved the score). On the other hand, the real, sadistic slaughter of animals in the movie is clearly amoral. Much of the end product is brilliant, but, man, I wish they didn't kill those animals, it just made me feel guilty for watching. That said, it is definitely worth a watch, even if you hate it, it's something you won't forget.
