We are still experiencing a cold snap here:

Extreme Cold Warning for Southern Manitoba

Active for next 10 hours ·
Environment Canada
This alert has been updated.

Posted 6 hours ago

A prolonged period of severely cold wind chills is expected.

A bitterly cold Arctic air mass in combination with moderate northwesterly winds are producing extreme cold conditions over southern Manitoba this morning. Wind chill values of -45 to -50 are being observed in the region and little to no moderation is expected throughout the course of the day.

These dangerous wind chill values will remain in place over southern Manitoba tonight and Wednesday with gradual improvement beginning on Thursday.

Information regarding how to prepare for episodes of extreme cold can be found at the Province of Manitoba health web site:

Yesterday we were visiting one of Andy's friends from up North who was down here in Winnipeg due to a medical problem and was admitted to Health Sciences Centre.

After visiting her I went down to the gym and paid up for another three months. I figure my right leg is ready to go back to normal activities again.

Today I am getting my hair cut around lunch time and it's already almost 10 a.m. so I am trying to figure out how to squeeze in a quick workout before heading over to the hairdressers! :O_O::m_cruise:

I got me an urban winter jacket for Christmas (I’m such a fashionista ). Made by Levi Strauss and on sale for $89. I read yesterday how people in Chicago are getting robbed at gunpoint for their Canada Goose jackets. They run from $500 to over $1,000. I went to their website to see why they cost so much and noticed my jacket looks identical to the Canada Goose Windermere coat that lists at $1,095. Mine’s even got one of those silly round patches on the arm. It isn’t made of Goose parts but it sure keeps me warm in yet another polar vortex, caused by global warming, we’re experiencing. I don’t know how much warmer another $1,000 would make me feel, but I’m ultra happy with the warmth mine provides.

Also, Sunday morning I went out to feed the birds and heard my heat pump making a strange noize. I look and saw the thing was covered in ice from water coming out of a damaged gutter caused by high winds. The fan on the unit was encased in ice and so were all the side vents. I ran downstairs and shut off the breaker for the heat pump. I tried a hair dryer, ice pick and even a propane torch. But there was far too much ice to remove for any to make a dent. So I got a heater fan, took apart the top of the unit. Put the heater in the bottom of the unit and wrapped the unit in a tarp. Took about 4 hours to melt all the ice. I got the fireplace going and hooked up a fan to distribute the heat throughout the house while all this was going on. After I got all the ice melted I reassembled the unit and crossed my fingers hoping it hadn’t burned out. The motor and fan hummed like normal... thank gawd. Wow, not my kind of luck, especially with mega winter conditions on the way.

I wish I could have shipped the wife off to Tahiti that afternoon and not had to listen to all her nagging and bitching about the situation. Hey, $hit happens. :(

Wow - you are really Mr. Fix-It, aren't you?

Like Red Green says "If the women can't find you handsome, they can at least find you handy!"
:beat_chest:

oh yeah - Andy has a Canada Goose parka - he likes it (but I think he only paid $500 for his)

That is crazy - I just went there too and I think their prices are highly inflated. I am pretty sure Andy bought his at the Army Navy Surplus that used to be downtown. This was a few years ago. He did buy his new but I am pretty sure it was only 500 or so (maybe 600 at the most).

Lovely ride home last night in the snowstorm. I guess every plow truck was on strike because not a single road was plowed. The first stop sign I came to I slid right through it... Knew from that moment it would be a mess getting home. I mapped out my trip home to avoid as many steep uphill roads as I could, and gave myself plenty of room from cars in front of me when I did have to deal with one so I could get a running start to make it up. After supper I started the snow blower and the winds were howling. Decided to keep my glasses on to give my eyes some protection from the winds. At one point the wind blew the glasses off my face. First thought… Oh $hit. Second thought… Don’t Move! Got down on my hands and knees and felt around in the dark and snow until I finally found them. But I do love my big a$$ snow blower. I called off from work at the part-time job last night as our mountain road was terrible. The wife said nobody was going shopping anyway. I told her the only people shopping would be shopping in my department… snow blowers, shovels, ice melt and heaters. I figured they wouldn’t need me to help customers out as they’ll take anything available and will be fighting each other over the limited selecting we have left from a busy weekend.

Today we’re gonna see blinding snow squalls before the arctic air settles in.

Oh, Tahiti… how I long for you. :(

Thankful you made it home safe. Stay warm and safe. How is the daughter in college-- safe and sound too? You might need to invest in one of these :smile2:

LOL. I bet I could get a pretty rate being an Uber driver in a snowstorm with one of those. Daughter in college is doing okay, I guess. She has the four wheel drive Commander. She broke her glasses yesterday and insurance won't pay for a new pair until August. I told her to wear one of her other pairs of glasses for the time being and go to Eyeland for a cheap replacement until August. I asked her if she had another pair with her because before she went back to school this year I said she should take along a spare pair of glasses in case of emergency. She didn't respond to my text... probably doesn't want to hear it from me if she didn't. Well, if she doesn't have a spare pair, she's out of luck today with me sending them to her UPS.

I picked up an indoor propane heater and some Coleman pounders over the weekend in case any family member or friend loses electricity and heat with the polar vortex setting in this week. Last year, when we had a terrible cold spell, a couple of girls had come into the home improvement store looking for a heater as the heat in their apartment went out. We were out of everything, just like everyone else in the area. They had already driven 40 miles looking for a store that had heaters and were desperate. Luckily I had just purchased a oil-filled radiator heater (I always get some heater this time of the year to have in case someone has an emergency) the previous weekend and it was still in the car. I gave it to them for free because they were desperate and low on funds… and cute. They were very grateful and I told them to pay it forward sometime in the near future.

See? Underneath that rough exterior you're just a marshmallow :encouragement:

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, so I took a picture of my TV screen this morning:

weather in winnipeg January 30 2019.jpg

I just called the dentist (around half an hour ago) to cancel my appointment at 1 p.m. today and rescheduled it for end of February (fingers crossed the weather is better by then)

In case anyone can't figure out what W/CHILL -51 means, it means with the wind chill the temperature is minus 51.

Yesterday I got a bit of frostbite on my right thumb, just from trying to get a newspaper out of a box. The money got stuck so I was trying to retrieve it. That only took maybe two minutes max, but that is all it takes for exposed skin to freeze in this (awful) weather

I’m hearing reports an Illinois police department has placed Elsa, the Queen of Arendell from the Disney movie “Frozen,” under arrest for bringing polar vortex frigid cold temperatures to the Midwest.

The McLean Police Department shared the arrest on its Facebook page, writing: “Due to the EXTREME COLD weather, all criminal activity and acts of stupidity and foolishness has been cancelled … Even Elsa has been placed under arrest with NO BOND until further notice.”

At least they used pink handcuffs. :)

I heard there was a lot of backlash as parents were asking how are they going to explain this to their 4 year old.
